Lap cats
A lot of people like the idea of lap cats and some are under the impression that Ragdolls are more likely to be lap cats that some other breeds. However, in my unofficial observations, I think most of them tend to NOT be lapcats, usually preferring to lay beside you rather than on you. My Zachary will lay on my chest or stomach at night, but rarely hangs out on my lap other than briefly stopping by for some attention. I think it would be fun to take a poll on this. (This is my first attempt at a poll, so hopefully it will work).

Good idea. I was under the impression that Charlie (my new babie) would be a lap cat as well. He is not. Wants to be with us but not on us.

RE: Lap cats
My two are exactly the same! They sit on me in bed but only sit at the side of me during the day!! Mistral has only ever been on my knee once, in all the time I've had him and that was only for a short time. Definately not lap cats!!

RE: Lap cats
Zeke will sleep above my head and touching it or he will climb in my chair with me and has to be touching me but if I put him on my lap he jumps down.

Mykah will let us hold him but he does not really like to be a lap cat. He will sit on the couch mainly with James but will get up with me only when I go get him and likes to be cuddled like a baby then. No lap cats tho.

The chair I use for my computer or study is a thick pink one, Albus lies up the top of it. Otherwise he lays on the desk or at my feet.

RE: Lap cats
Mine both like to sit either curled up against me or with the front half of their body on my lap-- especially Winston, who I call my "couch buddy" and who will even hug my arm as I'm petting him. Ollie is more my computer/desk buddy, sitting next to my computer and licking my arm and hand while I pet him, with an occasional foray onto the couch. Ollie also LOVES being picked up and held. When they were little kittens they'd curl up in my lap, and now if I put them in my lap in a comfortable position they'll hang out there for a little while, but they don't curl up there on their own because they're so big that it's difficult for them to get into a comfortable position on my lap.

Astro is constantly jumping up to sit on our laps. He immediately flips over onto his back to be held like a baby and wants his belly rubbed. It's only if we don't comply that he jumps off and goes to the other person with the empty lap. He can go back and forth like this all evening while we're watching TV.

RE: Lap cats
Whether a cat is a literal lap cat depends on the cat -- and the lap (and other pets and ...).

Best,

RE: Lap cats
Leo (my domestic shorthair) is SUCH a lap cat. He climbs right up on my chest, nose to nose with me, for loving. He purrs and it can be heard from across the room! Not only does he do this to me, but also my roommate, boyfriend or whoever else is paying him attention. He is SUCH a lover. Dexter is much different. Most of the time he wants to run around and play be crazy. He will lay next to me to be pet but not ON me, unless its bedtime. Then he is a changed cat! He lays right on my chest and "makes biscuits" around my head in my hair and licks my face, all the while purring away. I LOVE how cuddly he is when we're in my bed (except when he decides to do it all over again at 3 AM!!) I'm hoping that once he's older and has settled down a bit he'll be more of a lap cat.

RE: Lap cats
I have a unique situation with Teddy since I don't actually have a lap. Since I only have one leg Teddy can't sit in my lap but what he does do is lay next to me where my leg would be with his head or tail on the leg that I do have. Sometimes he just lays next to me. I guess if I had a lap he would be a lap kitty sometimes but not all of the time. He really liked laying next to Peek-A-Boo and some part of him had to be touching her when he was sleeping.
