My sweet Dexter
Hi, I was on this forum years ago when I was first looking at getting a ragdoll. I got my sweet Dexter. We had to put him down last Saturday at just 4 years old. Turns out he only had 1 kidney and he went into complete kidney and renal failure. I am truly heartbroken over my sweet boy.

I've been there and my heart goes out to you. It helps if you continuously remember all the fun and good memories you & little Dexter shared. I'm so sorry for your loss.

RE: My sweet Dexter
Very sorry to read of the death of Dexter so young. Hopefully soon your thoughts will be more about the good times than about the sadness of the loss.

In this context it is probably worthwhile to note that selecting a kitten with only one kidney should not be a problem, since it is a fairly common gestational issue. First, having one kidney is safe - and that is why folks often are kidney donors of one of theirs for someone in kidney failure. Leaving yourself with just one is about as safe as having two. If one DOES have some health issue that attacks the kidneys, then it will not go after just one of them. Both will be subject to the problem and the margin of benefit is not much improved by having two. So, feel safe in adopting a kitten with just one. (Sadly, kidney problems are a major cause of illness and death in all cats.)

Best,
JanH

RE: My sweet Dexter
I remember you both too. I'm so terribly sorry to hear of your loss, he was so young too which makes it all the harder.
This just reminded me of our Fluffy whom we lost due to kidney failure in December last year, like your Dexter she only had one (small) kidney and it felt that she left us far too soon. She was 6 and a half years old.
I truly can feel with you in your loss and know how heartbroken you must feel. I still cry for Fluffy when I think of her, they just become so part of lives, don't they!

RE: My sweet Dexter
Thank you so much everyone. Jan H thank you that is really good information. I feel a lot better now. It's amazing things you remember. I always called him my dum dum cuz he would flop off the bed literally every day. Yesterday my daughter said "Dexy was a dum dum" I busted out laughing and said "yup but he was our dum dum" lol.
