Sassy is 14 weeks old and I have her on Royal Canin BabyCat dry food which I keep down all day. I feed her a can of kitten wet food in the morning and she loves it but generally only eats a little more than half of it. I've been throwing the rest out but hate to waste it. Is it okay to store it in the refrigerator and heat up the rest later in the day? Or is it better to just throw it out and use a new can every time?
I'm assuming that as she gets bigger she'll be able to eat a whole can without it filling up her little belly.
Why would you heat up the canned food? It is fine to put the left over in the fridge and feed later. You might want to consider not free feeding the dry or take up the dry about an hour or so before feeding the wet, that way she is hungry and eat it all. What size is the can of wet?
That's a good idea...I will try that! The wet food is a 3 oz can. I don't usually heat it up for her, I just thought if I refrigerated the leftovers she might not like it cold. Do kitties like that? I guess I'd just have to try. I just didn't know if it was safe to save leftovers or not.
make sure you cover the can, some cats like it a room temp, some like it cold, but never heat the food it changes the consistency or damage the nutrients. Although you can put the food in a plastic container and put the container in hot water to warm it a bit. Not sure if I explained that correctly.
Gotcha! I will try giving her the leftovers cold & see if she'll eat it. Glad to know it's safe to save...although I'm sure before long she'll be able to gobble up the whole can, she's growing so quickly!
Thanks again for the advice...I didn't know that about heating the food!
Most cats do not like cold food. The danger of using a microwave is getting hot spots that can be too hot. To avoid that you can let it sit for a bit after microwaving - and do not overdo the microwave time and level. You can also float the bowl of food in a bowl of hot water to gently heat it through.
My Sassy takes up to 3 days to finish one 3 oz can... I refrigerate it and give her a small amount with a little bit of warm water on it, to take off the chill. Does the trick every time!
Thanks so much for the tips/advice!

If you just micro it for a few seconds to take chill off it should be fine but as Jan said let it sit to avoid hot spots. I met a man in the feed store last week who is a petfood nutrinionist, working for Natura now who make Innova, EVO ect... talked to him for almost an hr, it was a great talk, he took me and showed me ingred on the food bags & explained which is for what!! nice man, he is a major cat lover, breeds Main Coons. So one of his wont eat the wet unless he sears it in a pan first

of course he cools it before feeding. I loved talking with someone who jumps through hoops for their kitties like i do.

Before I had two food hogs

I would give Oliver half a can, refrigerate the other half and then microwave it for about 10 seconds prior to feeding. With Stella around I have no leftovers.
