Full Version: Vet experiences -should we switch?

I am really going back and forth as to whether to switch vets. The clinic near us (about 3 minutes away) has 5 vets and of course is very convenient. However, all of the "popular" (aka nice bedside manner) vets are always booked and so if something comes up we inevitably get one of the vets who, although very competent, doesn't always have the best bedside manner - makes comments about Bugsy being too fat (12 pounds, female), surprised that she still has claws, etc. So in addition to similar experiences for our Cavalier, I wonder what price convenience? The visit yesterday was a result of eye discharge and I wanted to get her in (late Friday afternoon), and they were able to squeeze her in. Our former clinic (before we moved) is about 5-10 minutes further and is a solo practice (the cat only clinic is about 20 minutes). The latest comment was about Bugsy's weight, so I wonder if they really GET Ragdolls? I have built up almost a resentment toward this clinic, but continue to go due to convenience. Also, the former owner (breeder) doesn't do rabies for her ragdolls and so of course this clinic looked at me like I was a Martian or something for not running right over for a vaccination. We do need to get one, I found out as it is required in our city, but it's the attitude of it all. I'd appreciate some thoughts on whether we should switch or stay due to convenience. Thanks.
Minor convenience issues should not be a factor in selecting a vet.
I would go to where you feel you get the best treatment and have the best rapport with the vet. I had a vet with Simon that I drove 50 miles to visit because she left our area, but she really was good with him and knew all his history. The only reason I don't take my girls to her is that she left to teach at a vet school. I have found another solo practice vet that I have every confidence in now. Amazingly enough, it is only about 5 minutes from my house.
I agree with teresak if it were me I would like to have a good rapport with my vet and have confidence that my animals are treated well- it is a bit like choosing your own docotor if you are not confident with them or have a personality clash you often don't go when you should.

The other thing would be to actually discuss your concerns with the vet tell them you are concerned with what they are saying and ask them to explain why they believe Bugsy is over weight perhaps they assume you know? Often professionals expect us mere mortals to be physic and often it's not till someone steps up and says hey please explain that they adjust there manner when dealing with you, remember you have to be your animals advocate (Voice) good luck
