Hi

I know that male dogs settle down when desexed, but, is there any difference in male cats.

My boy is 5 /12 months and being desexed next week (the reason it is being done this late is that my vet prefers this age due to being able to handle the anaesthetic etc better.)

The last few days he has been getting more "robust, playful, nuts" and getting a bit carried away at times with his playing. ie using his claws and teeth more. He is hunting the dog and leaping on her and then they are wrestling, quite roughly. This seems to excite him (and her) a bit and then he continues the play with us more agressive. Will desexing calm him down? He thinks he is a big hunter.
He probably will not be much calmer. Most of the play and high activity level is not testosterone generated. As for getting excited and biting and scratching, these are normal play and he just needs to be taught limits, which is best done by other cats. When he gets excited in this way, then just have a one to three minute time out in a small room and then get him and cuddle him. He will have calmed and can then be diverted to other play - even if vigorous like a wand or da bird.

As for handling anaesthetic, in fact it is felt by those who study early speuter that younger kittens handle it better. However, both young, a bit older and even old do well with the surgeries.
hi
milo was desexed at 5 1/2 months also cause that's my vets preference and mine too! he was fine after the procedure no problems at all, I noticed that he did calm down abit and also became alot more friendly more of a lap cat follows me like the dog LOL wether this was due to the fact he was neutuered or just his age not sure all I can say for sure was there was a noticeable difference in his behaviour. All the best for the big day let us know how you get on.

Hi Julie, thanks for that reassurance. Hammy has been marvellous and has never used his claws or teeth on us to the part where it has broken the skin. He just seems so much more active lately and just loves stirring the dogs up, the little bugger. When they are not around he is an angel. I think I will just have to seperate him from the one dog that causes all the problems. They are just like teenage kids feeding off each others enthusiasim. They are hilarious to watch though, but crazy.

Cheers

hi there! my George is about the same age....he will be 6 months on the 21st. He has his appt. on Monday. Im a little nervous but will be relieved when it is done.
We have had the same vet for 5 years, and he has always spayed or neutered our babies between 11-12 weeks of age, and we have never had any problems with either gender. They seem to bounce back so much quicker when they are younger. It is a fairly common practice among breeders to have them altered before going to their new homes. I haven't seen any behavior changes, due to being neutered, unless it is an older male, and then we see a stop of spraying.

Purrs,
Stormi
Moe was neutered at 12 weeks, when he was still with the breeder.

Moe also went through a period of stalking our dog, jumping on him and even biting him. For the most part our dog just ignored him and continued to do whatever he was doing, so I don't think the biting was very hard...just trying to play. When I saw the biting happening I'd say No to Moe and he would stop (he responds really well to "no").

Occasionally our dog does want to play with Moe if Moe instigates it (although I think he knows it's not an even match due to size difference) but I don't let them...I just pick Moe up and they lose interest in each other.

Anyway, Moe has since completely given up on stalking him (for about the past month to two months (he's 10 months old now). I think Moe was just sorting out his boundaries and figuring out how far we and our dog would let him go with his play. He does still give him the occassional soft-pawed swat to the head during storms when our dog is vocally worried-sick about all the thunder and lightning. Kind of like "knock it off, will ya!". Sometimes it's so soft it looks like he's giving him a pat on the head...it's pretty cute. Tongue

Just thought I'd share my similar experience with a dog in the house...hopefully it's a phase for you also. Smile

Hello there how did George go with his operation ? hope that everything is well and you are home and relaxed again let us know
hi Julie,
actually he goes tomorrow morning. I will be glad when it is done so I can stop worrying. ;/
I know it is safe and I know it is done every day....but to be honest I dont even like
the idea of leaving him at the vets office without being there with him. I'll post tomorrow after I pick him up.

Hammy was desexed on Friday. He came home as if nothing had happened. Still stalking shadows on the wall. Still chasing the dog and the kids around the house , all in hysterical fun. He seem to only have that 1x week when he went over the top, as if he had so much energy to burn. He has calmed back down to his normal silly self. I have also left our bedroom door open at night so he can come and go throughout the house. He seems to have liked this as he gets up sometimes and roams around. He does not make any noise and does not wake up us or the dogs. But he will come and snuggle with us and sleep when he is ready.
