As we will soon be bringing our beautiful Raggie boy home, I have got rid of my Dettol sprays, or anything containing phenols. A cat we used to have had a reaction to walking over a surface I had sprayed with Dettol, she was really ill with sickness and diarrhoea, and I don't want to go through that again! I use a solution of washing powder and water to wash my floors, and I make up a solution of Milton to spray my worktops, and daughters potty etc. In my aviary and dog loo area, I use veterinary Virkon S. Are these safe??? It is so hard to find cat safe cleaning products, and the last thing I want is to poison our precious new baby!!! Sad
Amber, what country are you in? It may help with suggestions if we know that as all products are not available in all countries.
Sorry! I'm in the UK!
I think that a common sense approach is best and that seems to be what you are already instituting, already having pets and a young child it sounds like you are already on top of things.
Virkon is an excellent disinfectant. I don't think you have to worry about that one if the instructions are followed. Not familiar with the others.
Thank you! Hopefully what I'm using is ok then! It's just worrying when cats are so sensitive and absorb chemicals through their pads. I'm worrying about him before I've even got him!!!
I have started cleaning with white vinegar. I find that it is good with odours too. The vinegar smells dissappears.
I have even started disinfecting their litter trays with it and have found they still use them as normal.
I like it because its natural.
I also use white vinegar and baking soda to clean the tub Valentino is constantly playing in. But unfortunately, bleach cleaners like SoftScrub really do a better job!
I feel the need to clean the kitchen sink with bleach (especially since feeding raw food) but I always rinse very thoroughly.
The vet assured me that that should be okay. Hope so!
Thanks, I have tried vinegar, but hate the smell! Also, I still feel things aren't properly clean! xx
Vinegar is your friend. It's also great for cleaning up smells you can't detect, but that might cause pets to repeat an "accident". I've even set a bowl of it in a room just to freshen it up. I only leave it a couple of hours. The smell DOES disappear. I don't know if it's just the clean, or if vinegar actually does leave an almost sweet scent to the air.
For floors, nothing beats a steam cleaner. It's amazing what mine has done for my vinyl kitchen floor and my bathroom tiles. You KNOW your surface is clean and there is no chemical residue.
