I was wondering what people's actual experience was when they adopted an adult cat.
How long for the cat to get used to you?
your home?
a resident cat?
I know there is a huge variation depending upon personality and other factors
Gail, it's been my experience with adopting out my adults that they've done extremely well. My shyest girl did spend 1 1/2 days under the bed but after that seemed delighted with her new situation and since she was not the happiest camper in a multi-cat household it's worked out to be the best for her...her owner says she is the most delightful companion now. I know the reports I've gotten on all of them have warmed my heart! I do know some that weren't really lap cats in my home with all the competition have turned out to full time lap babies!
I adopted both of my older girls at the same time from the same breeder thinking it would make things easier, but I swear, I think they became stressed and took it out on each other (of course, they still are not the best of friends either). Samantha hid for almost 2 days back under the corner of my desk. Simone was out and exploring everything. Overall though, I would say they adjusted really well. I stayed home the first week with them and I think that helped some too. Their safe room was my office and I stayed in there all day working on the computer so they got used to me fairly quickly. If I had it to do again, i would still adopt an older ragdoll (I would snap up Jenessa in a heartbeat if I could!)
I'm glad to see this thread! We'll be welcoming a retired breeder home in the next few weeks and I'm interested to read what others experiences have been.

Myself and Boo are about to adopt an ex stud male too so this thread could prove very handy for us.
We a;ready have a 12 year old Tabby female (Jazzy) but hopefully all will go well ..... we'll keep you posted

Well so far we've only have experience in trying to introduce a young adult stud lol, I don't think it's quite the same thing
But Arthur warmed up to us within a few minutes and has been a smooch ever since
