Are you trying to place an avatar (photo under your name?) or a signature that appears at the bottom of each post?

For Avatar go to User CP, and on your left there is a place for Messenger and then things such as inbox....
Go down and there is another box for Your Profile, under Your profile, the two bottom links will update/change your avatar and signature.

Photos for the avatar are a specific size, but signatures can be larger.

Have you ever signed up for Photobucket.com? It is a free storage place to have your pictures on the web. What I did with my signature, is place it in photobucket, and then used the [IMG] image tags and this is an example of what mine looks like through photobucket.com

This can be confusing, so if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask or email me. Once you have done the signature once, it is pretty easy after that.
