Cooper will be 11 weeks old on Wednesday.

The breeder took him to her vet to be neutered today. The same vet neutered Newman last year when he was a few days shy of being 10 weeks old. But he sent Cooper home without the surgery.

He said he wasn't "mature" enough yet. It had to do with his actual testicles and not his overall size or age.

She told me it wasn't anything to worry about - but now I'm thinking...is there a chance it will be fine in a few more weeks and also a chance that things won't mature as they should (I think "mature" means "descend" in this instance) and I might be looking at a very expensive and more serious surgery for him?
Is it an issue that the testicles were just high in the canal, or just small so they were harder to snip?

If it is a problem that they could not find the testicles at all, they might have to look to see if they are in the abdomen shich could cause more problems, and be more costly.
I wish I'd thought to ask! I'm hopeful since she said he should be "ready" to be neutered in a couple of weeks. But I'm really not sure.

She's leaving town tonight and not back until Saturday afternoon so I hope I can find out before then.
Dexter was in the same situation, when the rest of the litter was done, his junk was too immature. My own vet also had some difficulty "feeling" his testes until he hit 13 weeks. He is having it done in two weeks and the vet doesn't anticipate any problems (Dex might have another opinion). Hope that the same is the case with Cooper!
Thank you so much! I'm hoping to have Cooper neutered when he's about 15 weeks old (it's a nice time scheduling wise for me with work) so hopefully it'll all be out of hiding and easy to find by then.
Hopefully his testicles will have descended by then. If not, the surgery they do is pretty much like a spay in that they make an incision in the abdomen and go get them. I've had two little boys have to have this done and they recovered just fine. My vet charges the same price for this procedure that she charges for a spay. Just tell Cooper to jump up and down on his hind legs and let gravity help Smile
Thanks! This was really not his day...

When the breeder went to pick him and his sisters up she learned the tech notated something incorrectly and the vet accidentally opened his abdomen up thinking he was a girl to be spayed...he feels terrible about the mistake.

I figured since they opened him up, they would have gone forward with finding his testicles but apparently the incision isn't in the same spot so he closed him up.

I'm not happy about this but I guess it will all be okay. Should the incision be healed by Sunday? I really, really hope he doesn't need to be cut open again when I take him to my vet to be neutered. I hope he bounces right back from today.
We let spays go home within that time. Any external stitches would not be out. That would be at 11 to 14 days. (Many spays do not have external stitches.)
I was told there are no stiches that need to be removed. I really can't believe this happened AND he's still not neutered. Sunday will be 6 days after his mistake surgery. By that time, how healed will the incision be? I feel really bad this happened. It will be horrible if he has to be cut all over again if the testicles don't descend. My poor boy Sad
The incision alone is not as much stress as a spay. He should be well closed and any infection at the incision site, which is unlikely, should have surfaced by then. It is quite possible it will be healed at the surface. It is amazing how unfazed kittens are by the surgeries. Ours do not even have any down time that evening, although one is always told to keep them quiet for some days. Right.
