Some vets tend to make these generalizations about breeds. This kind of information is rarely collected nor is it usually accurate. Vets know very little about breeds, which is understandable since for what they are doing it rarely makes any difference. I always wish folks would ask these vets for a reference for the information so that it can be reviewed. When that is done, they usually say it is just an "impression." And few vets treat enough Ragdolls to HAVE an impression about the breed as a whole.

You have the explanation about HCM, which is the most common cause of heart disease in cats - all cats.

As for GI upset, Ragdolls do not have any more than any other cats. It has never been a problem for our Ragdolls.
I hope you're sweety's eye improves soon. Totally agree about some vets making generalizations, once we were told Ragdolls were prone to dental disease just because we brought Lancelot in with a nasty case gingivitis. Up until then I'd never heard of Raggies having this problem more than any other cats. Also I think that given their size, some vets might assume they have heart problems.
My raggie Thomas has had a watery discharge from not long after we got him, he went onto 2 lots of antibiotics he was sneezing as well and after all of this he still from time to time has like a clear gel like discharge if I fuss to much and wipe it alot it seems to inflame it so in the past few days I've left it alone and it seems to be clearing up on its own. I honestly think he has allergies he gets in the most obscure of places where dust gathers and he comes out sneezing. Hope your babies eyes clear up ok.
Hey,
Goodluck with the treatment. I had a similar prob when I brought my two home initially. I noticed a bit of discharge in Nacho's eye at the breeder - and she said it was just stress after a visit to the vet (that's another story - not a recommended breeder!). I took them to the vet the next day and got various eye drops (and basically said it was conjunctivitis)- the drops didn't work- then creams....also didn't work. The infection spread to Chipotle, who got it much worse, they both were sneezing too, in the mornings could barely open their eyes....the vet kept asking me to come back each day (I was worried sick, and it cost a fortune) but nothing was working. Eventually I changed vet, they were prescribed antibiotics and it cleared up in a few weeks. Occasionally Chipotle's eye still reacts, then I just bathe it with salt water and it clears up immediately...but obviously that doesn't work when it's serious. It took months before Chipotle's nose stayed clean - initially I thought it was his marking, but realised it was a build up of something, from his illness.
Anyway, good luck with it! Mine are both now very healthy, but here is a pic of when they were poorly kittens, ..[Image: kittiesill.jpg]
