I need to buy a new cat carrier. I tend to prefer the soft carriers like the sherpas - but let me know if I'm making a mistake and should switch over to the hard crate style.

It's not for airline travel or anything like that - just short car rides.

The medium size sherpa bags are 18 inches long. The large is 20 inches long. I have the medium size now and Newman seems to fit fine. He's just over a year though and might have some growing to do still.

I found a nice deal and style on the medium sherpa bag that I really like but I'm not sure if I should be going for the large instead. Would 18" length be long enough for an adult male ragdoll for short trips to the vet etc. or is it definitely adviseable to get the larger 20" long size?

Thanks for the help.

I went through the same dilemma before I got Sophie. I had always used a hard crate type carrier for my cats, but after some investigation, thought perhaps something like the Sherpa would be better. I did eventually get the Sherpa in the large size, and I'm very happy with it. I got the large so as not to have buy something else when she gets bigger. I believe I got mine on Amazon at a really good price, somewhere around $40.00. I had seen the exact same ones at other sites for well over $70.00. I think I got free shipping also.

So, yes, I would go with the large size. This way when you baby gets really big, they will still fit!

Hope this helps

I don't think the size matters that much, after all it's only 2 inches difference - what is more important to me, especially with the soft crates, is the weight they can carry... after all the Ragdoll can be quite sturdy and heavy and males easily go up to 13/14 pounds and more Rolleyes
The medium says it's ok for pets up to 16 pounds and the large goes to 22 pounds.

I guess the large is the safer and smarter choice. I just love the new blue sherpa sport bag and it only comes in small and medium - no large. That's silly though. It won't be used much and I shouldn't look at it as an accessory (but the blue sport bag would really compliment Newman's eyes Wink )

Carol, after you switched from the hard carrier to the Sherpa - do you prefer the Sherpa style?
Sherpa carriers are nice. We have the Sturdicarrier and a couple that are on wheels that we use for shows. Can't remember the brand, but they are nice because you can stack the show supplies on top with bungi cords. For basic transportation we like the 2 Door pet taxi.

Do you think the 18" long sherpa that says it holds up to 16 pound pet is big enough for short, infrequent car rides to the vet or would I need the 20" one that holds up to 22 pounds?
For short trips around town the smaller one would work just fine.
When Mishka outgrew the plastic picnic basket carrier I've always used, I looked for appropriate carriers for the short ride to the vet's. I priced Sherpas, but I couldn't see putting that much money into a short-distance carrier.

I found a soft-sided carrier that has steel framework at Walmart for $30. I put a fleece blanket in the bottom to cushion the metal, and it works fine. It unzips on the top and the side. For me, it does the job, and I can spend the saved money on more toys!

Yep ... I've got the same kind of carrier, the metal frame is what makes me sure about supporting the weight, it folds down to a small package nicely and, opens on front and top - and the boys like it Big Grin
I'm going to look in to that! Cheaper is good since it's only for very short and very occassional car trips - and I love that it folds for storage. Thanks, everyone.
