So, lately, Dakota has been getting matts--mostly under his arms and near his tail. I try to brush him daily, but he still gets them, and he HATES when I sit and try to pick them out.

I don't like to use scissors because the matts form so close to his body, I am afraid to cut them, I would hate to cute him (I have heard horror stories on the forum too!)

I was looking around in our drawer of tools and I found a seam ripper (used for sewing--I didnt know what it was called, so I had to look up the name of it before I could post! I really wanted to share though)
here is a picture:

All you have to do is make sure that the pionty end goes stright through fur, and only fur, then just pull up sharply, and out comes the matt!!! amazing! and so much safer than scissors. Also, some of them even come with a little plastic bubble on the end for added saftey. Also, although most people probably have them around the house, they are super cheap--I bet you could find one at the dollar store.

Anyway, I just thought I would share--I was so happy when I first tried it out I had to get on here right away!
That sounds great.
Edward hasnt had any matts since getting his shave, but he is always prone to getting them under his arms too.

I would be scared about stabbing him with the point, but it seems alot better than scissors.
Back when I worked as a groomer, this is the one and only tool we would use for dematting. It is sharp on the under side of the angled little metal blades, but I would use this with a flicking motion of my wrist and it was amazing. I used it just enough to loosen a matt, then I would get the rest out with just a regular comb and it would slide right out.
