Hi Everyone!

[CAUTION: long post, full of questions ahead]

My kitten is still settling in great. I decided to name her Emma. I have questions about how much I should be feeding and the timing and method of feedings. Hopefully those of you with lots of Raggie kitten experience can give me some guidance.

Background: As per the breeder's recommendation, I am free feeding dry food (Chicken Soup for the Kitten Lover's Soul), and feeding wet food 2x per day (mixture of EVO Cat & Kitten and Pet Authority Adult formula). The reason for the mixing is that before I got her, the breeder told me that she would be eating the EVO so I purchased an entire case of the stuff. The breeder had been in the process of switching all of her cats from Pet Authority to the EVO, however when I got there, she told me that unfortunately when she had worked all the way to 100% EVO, her adult cats decided they did not like it and stopped eating it. Thus, she was then switching slowly back to the Pet Authority. I would like my kitten to eventually be entirely on the EVO since it is a high quality food and I already own a big case of it. LOL. But for now we are mixing the two. She weighed 3 lbs. when she went to be altered on the 22nd of June, but lost a bit of weight after her alter, although the vet said she is still at a healthy weight.

Quantity: How much total canned food do you think she should be eating each day? Right now I have been doing a spoonful of each wet food at each meal (so approx. 1.5-2 tablespoons per meal, 3-4 tablespoons per day). The first two days, she was not eating all of that. This morning however, for the first time she gobbled it all down and seemed to want more. Keep in mind that she does have dry kibble available to her all day long. She nibbles at that throughout the day but does not consume a substantial quantity. I put about 1/4 cup dry food in her dish in the mornings and she MAYBE eats a quarter of that in a 24 hour period.

So my questions are:
1. How much should a 12 week old kitten be eating on a daily or per meal basis?
2. It seems like she should be eating a greater quantity of dry food, is that true? If so, how should I encourage her to do so? Should I decrease the amount of wet food she gets?
3. When I put the wet food out, how long should I leave it out for? When she first got here, I was leaving it out for a long time so that she could come back to it and eat more when she wanted (which she did). The main reason I did this was because I didn't know what her appetite was like and didn't want her to go hungry because she was to nervous to eat it all in one sitting. Now that she is eating a little more robustly though, how long should it be left out? Furthermore, how long is it SAFE to be left out? (Before the wet food goes bad).
4. How much dry food should I be putting out a one time? Is it normal to end up throwing out a bunch of it at the end of the day that your kitten doesn't eat?
5. How long should I leave out a bowl of dry food? I have been throwing out the uneaten dry food and putting out fresh food (and water) each morning, and leaving it out all throughout the night. So it ends up sitting out for about 24 hours, but 8 of those hours are spent sleeping (She does sleep very solidly throughout the night). Is this to long to leave it out? Would leaving it out longer be advisable?
6. For the wet food still in the can, how long is it safe to sit in the refrigerator after opening? Since I am just taking a little bit from each of two cans, it is taking a very long time to get to the bottom of the cans. I have been using the same two cans since Friday and I think I still have a few meals left in them. Is this safe? Should I throw out unused food after a point and open new cans?

Sorry for the LONG post. I would really appreciate all the advice you can give.

P.S. For those of you saintly enough to read all the way to the bottom, a funny story: This morning while brushing my teeth I heard a meow and a commotion behind me and then a streak of gray fleeing the bathroom. I turned around to see the toilet water rippling. I guess the little booger's curiosity got the best of her and she jumped in to see what it was all about, but didn't like what she found. She then got her first bath (just washing her legs mostly, the water was very shallow). I think little Emma learned a valuable lesson today.
Most cats are very good at regulating intake, unlike dogs. Dry food is fine for a long time in the bowl. However, putting it out so that it will be consumed in a day or two is a good idea. No need to toss it. Just do not refill until what is there is eaten. The more wet food you provide, the less dry will be eaten since the cat is eating based on appetite. I would put out no more than is eaten in about an hour or so, although it is safe longer than that. If you see leftovers, reduce the amount at least for a while. You can decide what kind of balance you want between wet and dry and just regulate the amount of wet to have the balance you want while having dry always available. Ours complain about "empty dish" for the dry food even if they are not hungry at that moment, so they get used to it being there for them when they want - and many small "meals" are healthy.

Do use wet food feeding times as training times to teach names, to come when called ... .
Hi Carly

Im by no means an expert on this (far from it infact!) But have had my little baby home for just over a month now so can tell you how/when/what he eats. Charlie has a pouch of wet food in the morning, I leave it down for him when I go to work and its always all gone by the time I get home (obviously though don't really know how long it takes him to eat all of it) He has a bowl of dry food down all the time (day and night) and he'll regularly have a little nibble from that. Then at around 6.30pm he'll get another pouch of wet food which 9/10 he will eat all of it but if theres any left when I go to bed (aroun 11ish) I'll chuck it away and just leave him with the dry food over night.
Thanks for the advice to both of you! That answers a lot of my questions! I think I was being a bit over-paranoid about the issue of food going bad or getting stale. I'm glad to hear from others what is normal. I really appreciate it.
Hi, Carly,

I usually send my babies home on a combination of wet and dry. By twelve weeks my babies are usually eating 1/2 can of food twice a day and also eating dry food periodically throughout the day. I think I'd have a mutiny in the house if I only gave them a couple of tablespoons! I think I would offer a little more than you're doing and if she doesn't eat it, then cut back so as not to waste food. This is an important time of growth for your baby and she may prefer wet to dry or vice versa, but I would make sure she lets you know her preference.
Thanks Edie! It's great to have an indication of what is a normal amount to feed. I will up the wet food some. Earlier today I had been thinking about how I wanted to feed her an appropriate amount so as not to set her up for weight problems later in life, but now I think that was a silly way of thinking. She is a growing kitten for heavens sake! Would I restrict the meals of a human baby because I was worried about her having an unhealthy weight later on? NO WAY! Babies need to eat.
Hi Edie! Phoenix is eating 1 to 2 Tablespoons of wet twice a day, per instructions from the breeder, then free feeds on his dry food. He is on the smaller side, weighing barely 2 LBS. at adoption (5/27), so should I be feeding him a whole half a can of wet twice daily now? I don't know how much he weighs, but will when he gets his booster shot. I'm guessing maybe 3 LBS. I sure don't want to underfeed him.

He gobbles up his canned food within minutes at his feeding times & licks his bowl clean. His appetite is wonderful!

Carly....sorry for the intrusion on this thread.

I would certainly offer more than he's getting. At his age and size I would give him all he wants...he was a little guy when you got him. I've never had a 12 week old that didn't weigh at least 3 lbs. and some as much as 5 lbs., but I just don't believe kittens this young can or will overeat.

Thanks very much Edie! Okay, I'll start feeding him more tomorrow. I was worried about him not eating his dry food if he ate more canned, and of course was going by what the breeder told me (but he has grown so much already). He also is missing his lower fang (it was pulled at the vets) and chewing his dry food is more challenging for him. I can see him working at eating it as he switches the dry food to the other side to chew. Sad This happened when he got caught under the foot rest (someone lowered it and didn't know he was under there) of a glider chair at the BREEDER'S HOUSE. Just ouch thinking about this happening to him.

As far as his weight....there was 6 kittens in his litter and both of his parents weigh about 10 LBS. I wanted a smaller kitten/cat, so this was a perfect find. It's not the norm, but I wasn't searching for a future 20 LB. Ragdoll. ;-)

He's adorable and obviously the perfect little guy for you. Don't worry about not eating enough dry. If he likes it he'll eat it, but wet food is a better diet for cats anyway, just not as convenient!
