We have very small ants in the house. We've just noticed them inside the front door going into the carpeting. Does anyone know what will kill them without hurting the cats?
We need to get rid of them asap before they spread!

If they are just inside your front door, i would assume that they are coming in from the bottom of the front door?? The best thing I know to get rid of ants is something called Terro (can buy at Walmart or any hardware store) - it comes in two forms - one are little ant traps you set out and the other is just a thick liquid and you put a drop on a piece of cardboard and set out. Now while I wouldn't want either cat to come in contact with it, because it only takes a little bit of it, perhaps there is a way you can use it, but protect it from the cats.
Maybe put on the floor close to the front door in the stream of the ants and cover with an upside down shoebox with just a tiny area cut out around the edge so as not to hamper the ants going in it and put something on top that will keep the cats from tipping it over over moving it (a brick? doorstop?)
This stuff is great and the ants go directly to it and eat it and take it back to their next. Give it 2 days and you'll be rid of all the ants. It's nice in that the ants go to it and you don't have to spread it out to get rid of them.
Just my thoughts and what I've used before.
Hum? I wonder if there is some sort of heavy cage I can construct for the poison, that the boys can't upset or get inside?

Yikes! Had a parade of ants to my cat's dish and found the trail to my outside door. I sprayed Raid Ant killer on the OUTSIDE doorstep and the ants are gone and haven't returned. Of course, it's important that your cats don't come in contact with the spray but if you can find the ants' entry and spray the outside trail, it should work. It did for me.
Oh yuk!! We had the same problem in a rental house, they're gross. Spraying the area outside is a good idea. So is sealing up any visible entry points with some sort of glue or adhesive (you can find it in the hardware store). At the last resort I would use poison, don't want the furkids getting into that! Good luck!
