I have never had a cat before, but after lots of research I think a ragdoll is the perfect cat for me. I love everything about their personalities and they are so adorable. I am looking for a big fluffy, laid back, affectionate cat who will hopefully be a great companion to my gentle, easy going golden retriever.
I recently visited with a breeder and am trying to decide between two kittens (they are currently 7 weeks old). Here's a little info:
#1 is a male blue colourpoint. He was the first born (of 4) and has always been the largest and first to do everything(eat, litter-trained..). He is very laid back and gentle, and the breeder says he is the biggest snuggler and always likes to be near people or other kittens. She also describs him as a little lazy (not in a bad way) and he is happy to observe the action. #2 is a male seal mitted with a possible blaze. He was the last born and is now almost as big as #!1. He is more mischievous and active. The breeder says he is often happy to go off on his own, but also loves to play. He plays "harder" than the others and is more focused.

I hung out with them today and noticed #1 loved laying on his back and having his belly rubbed, he also did snuggle a lot and tended to have a calm energy. #2 had a little more spunk. He liked being handled but was more interested in what was going on than on having his belly rubbed. The breeder said #1 and #2 tended to stick together, whereas the other two kittens(smaller male/female) were always together. I noticed that when #1 bite my fingers he was a lot more gentle than the others. The breeder said #1 played a little more gently than #2.

Appearance-wise. #1 is longer and has almost "sheep-like" denser fur compared to the others. He has soft features and is apparently quite handsome according to breeders. #2 is not as long and is a little stockier. He has a cute mischievous face, with a flatter nose and almost football shaped head. He is really cute and very alert looking. He has more whispy hairs and a thick coat but not as sheepy like #1. #2 has buggy (cute!) eyes and #1's are softer. I'd really like a big boy looking cat with a fuller, bushier, longer coat and am not sure if there's any way of knowing at this point how the kittens will turn out. Is there anything I can look for to give me some idea.

I really like the personality of #1 (seems typical ragdoll) but I am not sure if he's just more mature than the others. I think #2 has more spunk and character and is really cute, but am not sure if he'll be too independent. I'm thinking #1 might be a better companion to my dog (they have the same energy). I'm probably over thinking this, but if anyone has any insight (re: character/appearance) I'd really appreciate it.

Sorry this is soo long...I have so many questions and want to be sure to make the right choice. I know I'll have lots more questions, but this is the urgent one at the moment as I need to reserve my kitten soon. Thanks!
You have done a very thorough investigation of your future fur-child! Smile They both sound so wonderful but seem to have quite different personalities. I would think that what you see now is how their basic personality will be like as an adult. You've even assessed how he will bond with your retriever, good mummy work! The only advice I can give is to pick the one who will best fit in with your family and lifestyle. Whatever you decide you will be a very happy mummy Smile
You seem to like them both for different reason and they both sound wonderful and i think eather one would make a wonderful little pet.
By any chance would you want two raggies ..Most of us have found that once we get one we want another one they seem to be addicting. If there is a chance this would be a great opportunity .
If not then I would go with the kitty that picks me and is more interested in me.
Congrets and good luck
love to see a few pictures..Smile
Colorpoint.
LOL@Jan. Don't know what he based is opinion on, but for me reading over what you wrote, it seems you're leaning towards #1 anyway - so I'd go with that one too.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try to attach pictures.

So I just attached a picture of each kitten and I think it worked. Does anyone have any insight into how these kittens will look as adults (ie-size, coat, colour..). They are exactly 7 weeks old in the pictures. Also wondering if kitten personality at 7 weeks is a good indication of their eventual temperment.
They are adorable!!!! I have one of each (see my sig pic) and they are both beautiful in their own way. Size and coat will depend on genetics for the post part. As for personality - I'm not that familiar with 7 weeks compared to overall, maybe breeders can help you there.
They are both sooo cute! I think you should get both Smile But if that's not possible, I would choose number 1. He sounds like he has a great personality. I don't know anything about how they'll look as adults, they both look nice and fluffy to me. Good luck, let us know what you decide.
This site provides info on Ragdolls and there's a picture of grown seal colorpoint and mitted on the home page to give an idea of how they look as adults.

Cute and cute!
I just wanted to add a note about the personality of Ragdolls. Descriptions of this breed always describe them as really affectionate etc. Not all of them are lap cats. Other members of the forum here will back that up. Ours won't sit on your lap for all the tuna in the world nor will my friends ragdoll. Our Sage does certainly possess a docile and gentle demeanor and he's quircky and very interactive with my wife and I but he is no love bug. He is also shy of strangers.

Don't get me wrong we love our cat to death and think he is the end all of cats in the world, but they do vary in personality a bit. In any case would you really like a 15 lb cat with 3 inches of fur sitting on your lap on a hot humid day?
