Kevin and I took a trip to my boyfriends house last night and slept there and drove back to my place before I went to work. The thing is -- he did not use the potty once while we were there and I was a little worried about this. He was way to excited about playing with my boyfriends roommates to even think about going. He knows where his litter is there because he has used it before and I show him at least 2-3 times when we get there. Then this morning when I put him in his crate and into the car about 3 minutes he started to cry which I ignored because I thought he wanted to get out of his crate. Then he stopped crying and started pawing at the crate door where I noticed he had wet yellow stains on his paws. I opened up the crate to find a big puddle of pee in his crate. I had to hold him in my lap the rest of the way home so he wouldn't be immersed in his own pee. Not that I will be traveling with him that often -- but what is the best way to try and get them to go before traveling ... or how can I avoid this happening. It wasn't a huge deal, nothing a few minutes of cleaning wouldn't fix, but I don't think he was happy he had to pee on himself.
All you can do is put him in the litter and hope he gets the hint. Use towels or other absorbent bedding in the carrier and have extra with you. This is most likely just a "kitten" issue.
Maybe you can get him to eventually go on upon putting him in the litter box before you leave home. Simone will go if I put her in it (I swear that girl has a huge bladder and can pee a boulder of clumping litter, so I periodically put her in the litterbox so she goes before she gets so full she'll burst). Also, you might want to go to Walmart and buy some piddle pads (used to house train dogs with) and use one of the pads in the bottom of his carrier when you go. That way you can just pull it out and dispose of it if he soils it. I bought a bunch of them when I had Smoke inside in the crate since he has no clue about litter boxes. Made cleanup a little easier.
Awesome advice to the both of you! I appreciate your responses. I think the piddle pads will be perfect and like both of you suggested, I'll try and put him in the litter before any travel so can learn to try and go. Smile
Could he sit on your lap when you drive? Phoenix rode a total of 6 hours on his adoption day, and the breeder had a litter box in the back seat (for her portion of the trip in meeting me) that she said he used twice during the long ride. He just jumped into the back seat, used the litter box, and jumped back into her lap. I guess this would all depend on how much a kitten will sit on a person's lap.....Phoenix can & would sit on laps for hours. lol
hi, when i take my kittie to pick up my gf i put Tiki on the litter box, if she goes to another place i try again, she sometimes look at me and then use the litter box, last time she didnt use it but we tried, she behaved well =) i bought a pet cage (not sure about the translation) but i have never use it =( lol the first time i tried she was crying all the way, then i took her out and she sleept in my legs for the rest of the trip XD and that have become an habit, if she starts to move o.o i will have to use the cage (i carry it just in case) to avoid any accident.

so, put him on the littler box =) if he doesnt use it the first time try putting him again =)
