Triggers are not triggers for all cats. In your case, it seems the cat was overmarking your friend's scent and was not attracted to plastic. The problem is that one may not know in advance that a common trigger is not a trigger for the particular cat. Therefore, better to choose a material not known to be a trigger itself. It would be like having a cat use the sofa and protecting it by spreading newspaper over it. Newsprint is also a trigger for some cats. Would it work for some cats. Probably. But for other cats it would just be another reason to use that area.
