Hello! With all the talk across the nation about being "green", I am wondering how other cat owners deal with used cat litter. I have been placing the clumps in a plastic grocery bag and putting it in the trash. I am reading it takes many years for those bags to decompose. I am feeling guilty. I don't know what else to do with it!

Gus is doing well. The older he gets, the more cuddly he is. He is such a joy.

Blessings to all, Judy
It's so good to hear that Gus is doing well. Smile

I have a box of cheap no-name sandwich bags and have been using them to dispose of the litter clumps. I don't know if that's any "greener" than the grocery store bags, except they're smaller....but I probably use two or three a day. I've recently completely converted Moe over to World's Best cat litter, which says the clumps can be flushed, but since we're on septic here I'm a little hesitant. Shy

Cuddles to Gus! Big Grin
I don't think I would flush it either. My husband would have a fit if I plugged up the toilet and created a plumber's bill!

I've thought about digging a small but really deep hole in the back yard. Put some type of lid on it and dump the clumps in the hole all summer. We have city water so I need not worry about contaminating well water. I have to run that by the hubby.

I just love Moe's coloring. If/when I get another Raggie, I think that I would like one like him! Does he enjoy a good cuddle?

Blessings, Judy .. Gus sends head bumps to Moe!
we use plastic bags, but instead of using many small bags over the course of time, we use the same large garbage bag until its full, then we chuck it with the garbage. We scoop litter daily, but because we use the one garbage bag that lasts a whole month, there's less waste in the landfille!

Thanks Judy! Moe does love to cuddle. He won't sit on my lap for more than a couple minutes, but will lay on the couch belly up ready for a good long tummy rub. In the last couple weeks he's started the "drop and roll" in front of me when I'm walking around. Big Grin They are such a joy, as you said! Smile
Hi Judy,

It's milo's mum have you considered toilet training Gus how old is he - Milo is now 5months and almost completely trained on the final stage now - Boy what a difference I have not even a cup of litter per day to get rid off and in about 2 weeks no litter at all. It has saved us heaps of money and time and helps the environment too. I bought my litter kwitter system from ebay in australia for only $57 they retail for 199 in the pet shops . love to you both julie and milo
I am also using the litter kwitter system to train jemimah with some success. We also use much less litter now - I am using a flushable 'wheat' litter (which I figure can't be much different to flushing other waste down the toilet), but not very much goes down there when using the LK system compared to an ordinary litter tray. Eventually we are hoping to be litter free!
We use Worlds Best Cat Litter, it is corn based, and can be placed in the garden to decompose. It is all natural, and doesn't have all the dust that can be associated with the clay litters. It does still clump, and can be flushed. I love it and wouldn't use any other litter for our group.

Hugs to you Judy and Gus!!

Purrs,
Stormi
We use the sandwich paper sacks as well...figure this might be a little better than plastic. They are about the right size!
