Ok, this is a weird subject I know, but there are so many moms on here I figured I'd come ask. I'm at 11 weeks right now (12 weeks on Tuesday) and the past few days my legs have itched so badly I can hardly sleep. My legs are a bit dry but I'm using lotion a couple times a day (far more often than I normally do) and its not helping at all. I don't have a rash, just normal skin, but oh my god its like I went tramping through a giant pack of mosquitos. Tommy went out tonight and got me some calamine lotion, and that's helping a little bit. Any advice, or ideas??? I'm clueless here Sad Pregnancy is so screwy!
I feel like a little kid again. I grew up in Florida (heart of mosquito country) and so always had pink legs from calamine lotion...very nostalgic, but not in a good way!
I have not had kids yet, but is itchiness a common side effect from pregnancy?!? If it is, I had no idea! I hope relief comes your way soon Smile
I believe it is from hormone changes. I don't know if anything will really help, Try the calamine, lots of regular lotion. When you get out of the bath or shower put baby oil on your skin first, then pat dry. I'm afraid though that not much will relieve it. Just the beginning of the many changes that will happen. What is odd is that it could happen in one pregnancy but not others.
maybe try some oral antihistamines. might help stop the sensations of itchness.
in australia a common one is phenergan.
go to your chemist.
Drink more water, lots and lots! Smile Continue to moisturize as well and maybe you can find a lotion that works a little better.

Don't take anything without talking to your OBGYN first. Smile
Thanks guys! I took a benadryl and slathered on the calamine lotion before bed last night, which helped a lot. Though of course this morning I'm back to itching and I don't want to keep taking benadryl. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday, so hopefully they can do something to help! I can't even imagine itching until then though, and my legs look so silly with big pink patches of calamine Smile
Hormones changeing. I used Coco butter and it helped alittle, but............I still itched thru all 3 of them. I definatly would not take anything without your dr. okaying it first.
pregnancy does cause you to do all sorts of things and your brain for that matter.....by the end of it you will swear your entire being has been taken over by an alien. lol. pregnancy and motherhood is such an awesome blessing and miracle but that doesn't mean you have to love every second of it. Smile I wouldn't take anymore benadryl unless you call your dr. I can't remember if it's safe or not.....I will see if I can find that site that tells you what is safe and what isn't. Your Dr should also supply a list of what is okay and what isn't. I remember taking aveeno baths a lot. That seemed to help. Sometimes your body will react to lotions that you used to use just fine, but now go haywire. Try some lotions made for a baby or sensitive skin. There is something called PUPPS that will cause a rash/itching all over in pregnancy but that usually happens much later on if it happens. good luck. Smile
Jenny, you need to talk to your doctor of what is safe and not safe for you to take.
I just came back from the Ocean yesterday and while I was down there my skin was so dry I could have scratch it off.plus I have eczema double itchy and this helps. I put to cap fulls in bath water and soak awwww no more itchySmile

Thanks for the tips! I'm doubling up on cocoa butter and have stopped shaving for awhile (much to Tommy's dismay!). We're heading to the store soon, so I'll be checking out both the aveeno and neutrogena oil. I'll try almost anything at this point! No rash at all, so weird...my legs look perfectly normal, they just feel like I've broken out in hives! I'm also really hormonal today, I've had so many mood swings I'm starting to drive myself crazy!

My doctor gave me a list of "safe" medications, and benadryl is listed on there for allergies, but I'm scared to take too many of anything, even if it is on the list.
