Full Version: breeding father to daughter (but not mother to son)

I'll be first to say...I'm not a breeder and I wouldn't begin to know what I was doing! But I know there's a lot of knowledge here.

I was told that it's ok to breed a female raggie with her father (but not ok to breed a male raggie with his mother)

That sounds crazy to me (risk of genetic problems magnified). Is it crazy or actually acceptable?

I dont think this is a standard or acceptable thing to do. It is good to have several generations between relatives. Four generations is good but I have seen 3 generations in some pedigrees. The reason you want distance is generations is due to risk of major health issues.
That's what I thought! Seems like basic common sense? (and I don't see the difference between daughter to father compared to mother to son) Thanks for your input.
Line breeding is fairly common in young breeds to set the traits. There is no need to take those risks in Ragdolls today. The genetic risk is the same in both of your examples.
