Nelson found out on Thursday that his aunt's birthday is Tuesday. Thursday afternoon, he found out he could get a week off work starting Monday. We had monsoon rains all Thursday (I think. The days are running together). The rains stopped for awhile on Friday morning about 3:00. Nelson gets up at about 3:30 every morning for some ungodly reason. He followed his routine and put the dogs out for their morning constitutional in the backyard, then went to take his shower. As he was about to get out, he heard a distant roll of thunder and yelled, "Oh, no!" He grabbed a pair of pants and ran downstairs, but he was too late. Sophie, who has a serious thunder phobia, was over the fence and gone. This has happened several times over the years when there would be storms we didn't anticipate while we wer at work. After we had to pay $1800 for an ACL tear, we figured out that she wasn't going to give up and wait for us. She was going run, pain or not. After that, we've kept her inside any time we weren't home and every night. That morning, we slipped up. Nelson went out driving the neighborhoods in our area. I stayed home with the garage door open and doing all the heavy worrying. I called to tell him to stop looking until daybreak because Sophie looks for humans to protect her from the storm and it was too dark and too early for anyone to be about. Halfway through that speech, caller ID showed a call coming in and I cut Nelson off to answer. A man said, "Is this Mrs. Sophie?" I said, "Yes!!" Sophie had made it almost 3 miles from home and within 100 yards of a major highway when she saw that the "Fan Technology" building was open and people were inside. Sophie is doing a bit of limping, but she isn't showing symptoms of another tear. Rimadyl seems to be helping. Now, if we could just get our hearts to beat normally again.
Nelson said he'd better not go on his trip. I said I could handle Sophie, so he should go.

So, with Sophie back home, we went to work. Nelson said he believed I could take care of Sophie, but he didn't have a gift for Aunt Lollie, so....

Nelson couldn't go on a birthday trip without a gift.I slipped off work to find a gift. Oddly enough, I found some WWII cd's and some Big Band music, so we were set, there. Nelson could go.
Saturday morning, Nelson passed through the living room and said, "Oh, what in the world happened?" I looked where he was looking and said, "Oh, what in the world happened?" The question had worked for him and I wasn't up to thinking on my own. The ceiling had a huge dark brown stain. It seems our roofers hadn't covered a vent on the 2nd floor.
Nelson had better not go on his trip I said he could call the roofers from FL and they could call to make an appointment with me and, after the inspection, we could call Nelson together and work out what was going to happen. He could go on his trip.

Using techniques taught me by Teresa, I was able to construct a colorful small scrapbook of some of Lollie's old pictures as an additional gift. Nelson had BETTER go on his trip.
And he did. I just hope that, if Murphy isn't through with us, he'll keep his pranks to AL and me and let Nelson enjoy his trip.
