I have just seen the Mink Ragdolls online for the first time. I this a recognized color? They advertise them as being very rare, but several breeders seem to have them.
The colour or pattern whatever it is, is not accepted in any association in the Ragdoll breed I believe (not 100% sure off the top of my head). This has been brought up many times, and I am sure JanH and/or Curt will clarify and answer this question in full detail !!
I know they are not recognized in australia, not sure about other countries. Some ppl advertise them as "rare" ragdolls but many established breed societies don't consider them to be true raggies. I assume they are some sort of recent outcrossing.
This is an unaccepted variant, like a shorthaired Ragdoll would be. They are "rare" because most Ragdoll breeders do not want to include them in the breed. I doubt many pet buyers want them either, although there has not been a formal vote against them, unlike the vote of TICA breeders against the minks. Seals and blues remain the most popular Ragdolls and even reds and lynx, newer ACCEPTED variants, are less sought after by pet owners and are "rare" compared to seal and blue.
Mink is the presence of the sepia gene of the Burmese breed to replace one of the Ragdoll's two pointed genes. It makes the coat, including points, darker and muddier than a pointed cat's should be.
If these breeders REALLY believe minks are rare and in so much demand, then why do none of them have a breeding program that would produce ONLY minks. It is easy. Have males who are sepias and queens who are pointed. Every kitten produced will be a "rare" mink. ; )
Mink Ragdolls are unaccepted Ragdoll Breed Color Variants in most Cat Associations. Unfortunately, they were recently recognized as acceptable in the New Zealand Cat Fancy.
Thank you Jan and Curt, I figured as much from reading your previous posts on similar matters. It is interesting that the kittens are born with color, certainly a departure from the acceptable colors. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

As I understand it, supported by a grand total of NINE newbie breeders - and a minority of those polled even at that.
I noticed a lot of breeders offer minks in certain regions. I also noticed that some states (I think Georgia) most breeders offer minks. I also have noticed that when minks are offered there tends to be pictures of ragdolls that are "Solid" that do not have blue eyes.
I do not think I would ever spend the money on one of these or at a breeders who breeds one of these. It's no different to me than buying a purebred Lab and having it have spots like a dalmatian.I'll stick to the traditional patterns/colors.

Please be aware that most of the Mink Ragdoll Breeders are flaunting outdated certified TICA Ragdoll Pedigrees on their Websites which show no outcross to other Breeds to obtain to the Sepia Gene. The TICA Ragdoll Pedigree database was ammended in 2006. All current TICA Mink Ragdoll Certified Pedigrees will be generated and shown to contain outcrosses to TICA registered RagaMuffins which were owned and bred and TICA registered by me.

Sometimes all it takes is a very small faction of Members who responded to become a deciding majority

I understand.I'm also sure you realise that you would not be able to get AKC registration Certificates on Spotted Labs. Wish the same were true of those TICA registered "Mink Ragdolls".

It is my understanding that in this case it was a "deciding MINORITY" even of the few voting. In any event, we saw this in South Africa, who recognized solids for a few years and then abandoned the change based on lack of interest - and coming to their senses. One can hope the same for New Zealand, but I cannot imagine anyone looking to such a tiny group for the breed standard of our large, international breed.
