All the time but that's why he's locked in my room when no one's home and at night.

Oh my gosh, I just looked up Pica. I've pulled plastic and strings out of Bubba's mouth but I just thought it was a baby thing they did.
As far as them being safe together while you are away; My boys get upset if they can't get to each other. Menou got closed in the closet this weekend and Bubba was meowing and very upset. Menou does the same thing if he loses his baby brother. It's been that way since about the first week after we got Bubba.
