Poor little Freddie has been at the vets again last week. Every now and again his food seems to go straight through him. It happenned again last week and I took him to the vets, and they decided to keep him in. They did various tests but didn't really come up with anything definite. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is what they feel it might be but they aren't a hundred per cent certain! He's had an IV set up for fluids, painkilling injections and Steroid injection. I brought him home Friday evening and he's just getting back to normal, though he's still quiet and not playing much! Poor thing looks a mess with big bare patches where they've shaved him for the needles! His coat wasn't good to start with! Has anyone else had this problem with their Ragdoll? I didn't know cats could get Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

I don't really know much on the subject, but have read that plain yogurt can help with IBS in cats. However, I would confirm this with a vet before feeding to Freddie. I hope that all settles down with his tummy, it's no fun when our fur babies are sick!
Nothing sadder than a mom with a sick baby.
When I took Miles in, the former owner warned me that he had IBS and she had been told by the vet to give him only Science Diet ID dry food. She said his tummy still acted up now and then, but the vet had no further ideas. Also, she said, leave the building when he uses the litter box because it's foul-but you have to go back and look for blood, later. I took the bag and thought it over, then figured it couldn't get much worse, so I dumped the SD ID in with my Blue Buffalo inside cat dry that everyone else eats. We did have the rare case of diarrhea before the Blue Buff and it seemed to help. No more pukey hairballs, either.
Miles seemed to pick around the SD to get the BB. Within a month, he had gained a couple of pounds and was starting to look fluffy. No bloody stools. I decided that he just might have a tender digestive system that needed the extra greasing with the indoor variety and we've rolled happily on, ever since. He is eating less like he's starving now and his gain tapered off. I check the box behind him......waaaaayyyyy behind him because the BB doesn't seem to have odor control.

So, might you think of a food change? Wonder if cats get something like diverticulitis?

Poor Freddie, I'm sos orry to hear that he's been unwell. I have no idea unless you might feed him some pumpkin (no spices - just the plain canned pumpkin) - but then again, I don't think they have that over there! Please give that boy some tummy rubs from (and Mistral too). Glad to see you on again

On another note....I think that Cloe's Oscar was diagnosed with IBS -- maybe Cloe will have something to add....
Poor Freddie
It's the worst when our babies have to spend time at the vet. I don't know much about the subject, but I sure hope he feels better soon.
My vet suggests canned pumpkin too when cats have diarrhea. Get well soon Freddie!!
Poor Freddie! Hope that the vets will be able to nail down the root cause... Take care!
Poor Freddie, I hope he is feeling better soon.
I hope Freddie is well soon. He is such a lovely boy

Let us know how he goes

Mary, I'm so sorry to hear Freddie is poorly again. When we had Monica she came to us with serious tummy problems and was on the ID diet from the vets. This still gave her sickness and diaorrhea so eventually, after some trial and error, we discovered that the food she could tolerate and eat without daily without problem was store brand kitten food. Admittedly kitten food is not ideal for an adult cat and can lead to kidney problems later in life but Monica was definitely better while on it and I did clear it's use with Helen.
Thanks for all your suggestions. Teresa's right, we don't have canned pumpkin over here! Sorry! I'm taking Freddie back to the vet today for an injection to stimulate his appetite and another steroid for the inflammation. He actually seems a bit brighter today, so fingers crossed this will be the last visit to the vets.
