As many of you know, I am in a new apt. Since I moved in, I have not allowed my kittys onto the balcony. I am afraid that they may jump or fall and it is a long drop. I have thought of putting some kind of welded wire around the inside of the railing, but I am afraid that Bonkers (who is part monkey) would climb it.
Any suggestions? I'll post a pic of the balcony later.
Thanks
~Kitty
You're so right...most cats will climb over something like wire put on the inside and be gone. How about something like these.....The funhouse is about $65 which isn't too bad and when you consider all you'd have to buy to just put up wire, plus the time and aggravation -- then $65 is really quite a deal!
Better yet, keep doing what you have been.
Thank you Jan and Teresa. I think the playhouse is out of my budget for now, though it looks like a lot of.. well.. fun! I think perhaps I had best keep them in. I can always have the screen door closed and they can enjoy watching birdies. Perhaps I can get the playhouse at a later date.
You may be saving yourself alot of heartache just by doing that. Once they get the "feel" of the patio they may just sit at the door and cry to get out -- by leaving the patio screen door closed, they have the best of both worlds and you save your sanity!
I can't see the link/picture that Teresa posted, but its probably the best idea to keep them inside. In our previous house, i would let the cats into the secure backyard for a supervised visit, however they began expecting it and meowing at the door to let them out.
If you keep them inside permanently, they wont know what they are missing out on.
However, I really like the idea of Teresa's "enclosed deck" she has at her house (from what ive seen in pictures. If this apartment is permanent, maybe you could try something like that in future.
hmmmm. Id probably keep them inside. Good luck.
When I decided to make Bonkers strictly an indoor cat, he drove us insane for weeks. Meowing, running to the door and stretching up trying to open the door himself. He went nuts, wanting to get back out. He is settled now.. he still wants to get out.. running to me whenever I open the slider but he does not try to dash out. I watch him like a hawk.
Another good reason to keep them in is that I really love backyard birds and I want to have my feeders out. Can't do that with cats underneath, so I guess that decision is made.
Thanks Teresa, Jan, Meghan and Lisa!
I think that is a good idea, KittyGlitter, to keep them in
