just a question, I watched cats 101..they said ragdolls are generally healthy, but should be screened occasionally for heart disease, is this a pretty bad problem or how likely is it? It sorta scared me.
HCM is the major type of heart disease in cats. The Ragdoll is lucky in that the mutation that caused HCM in Ragdolls has been identified and can be avoided. Therefore, the risk of heart disease in Ragdolls is probably lower now than in other cats if one gets a kitten whose parents have both been DNA tested to confirm they do not have either of the identified HCM genetic mutations. (ALL breeding Ragdolls should be DNA tested to be free from these two mutations BEFORE they are bred, so make sure that has been done before getting a kitten. There are other HCM causing genetic mutations, but none has been confirmed in Ragdolls so far.)
Another reason to avoid the backyard breeders.
