We got Alyss (I picked a name!) today, and dropped her off. She seems accustomed enough to the house, since we seem to have a bigger problem with keeping her out of things rather than trying to get her out. But she shies away from my hand whenever I reach out to pet her, and hiss a bit at me whenever I approach her. But after I start petting her, she'll start purring like CRAZY, which confuses me a lot, and when I leave, she starts crying for ten minutes.
I understand her being frightened, but the mixed signals confuse me. And how do you keep a kitten out of places such as corners of rooms or behind couches?
I"m unsure what you mean when you say you "dropped her off". First you may want to confine her to what is considered a safe room - like your bedroom, with her litterbox, and food. THat is the room that you can possibly make kitten proof so she won't have anything to get "into". A smaller space will also help to calm her some and give her a sense of safety. Just sitting quietly with her in there or engaging her in play may help her to overcome her shyness of you (hissing) and help bond with you.
Sorry, that was a typo. I meant to say "took her home". I don't know why I said that...
But yes, we have a safe room for her, but she finds a way to venture out on her own. I left the room, and she followed me out when the door didn't close all the way (the heat blows air out and sometimes won't let it close properly). Then she went off to explore on her own, though she almost ate a plant.
What a lovely name

Congrats on your new edition! I monitor my 2 lil' guys whenever they are roaming the house, for the most part anyway. They almost always end up getting into some mischief! Makes it fun though, they are not young for long

Thank you!
Is it normal for cats to not eat for the first day or two when they move? Alyss is very playful, but she hasn't touched her food.
