I'm so happy to find this forum! Just a quick question, I adopted a 4 year old Ragdoll yesterday. He's a complete love, but I'm concerned because he hasn't eaten or used the litter box in 24 hours now. I've had cats all my life and I know every cat is different, but this concerns me greatly. He was raised in the house I adopted him from, one owner situation, and he was fine yesterday at their house.
I understand the shock in changing his living environment and all but the no water, food or litter box has got me worried.
What do you think, overly concerned or rightly so?
Hello Caren! Welcome! Is he drinking? Has he maybe urinated somewhere other than in his litterbox? I would be concerned also. Keep checking the forum, one of our many experts will surely give you some advice, they are so VERY HELPFUL to all of us! Hopefully, by the time you read this he will have peed! Judy
:)Welcome Caren !!
I am a newbie too

!! This forum is a great find isn't it!
I got my boy two weeks ago and he didnt drink, eat nor used the litter tray for the first day. Come the second day, he started to eat his dry food & was using his litter tray just to pee but he still wasn't drinking which got us a little concerned. We kept an eagle eye on him and on the third or fourth day, he started to drink. Phew!!!
So in Gumnut's case, it was purely due to change of environment etc. Perhaps your little man is going through the same thing? Keep an eye on your little man and if he is still not eating, drinking nor using his litter tray perhaps contact your vet?
Let us know how he is progressing.
Cheers
Elisa

Hey Jude!
That's just it, I've totally been monitoring his surroundings. He did move from the front bedroom under a fainting couch to my closet, so I moved all the food, water and kitty box in there. Then he moved from the closet to my antique bed under the box springs and in between the slats. As you know they can be "very large" cats and in Thurston's case, it's double large, lol. So I took off the mattress and box springs and my daughter extricated him from the slats and I moved him to the closest bathroom. I tried to read anything and everything on new quarters for older cats and I guess the smaller the space the better off they are. But.. with that said I'll give him until tomorrow afternoon then contact the Cat Hospital down the street and have him checked out.
Thank you so kindly for your reply, I really appreciate hearing from someone out there!!!

Hi Missy E!
Yes this forum is absolutely fabulous. When you are presented with a problem with your kitty, it's so comforting to know there is someone that either has lived through the same thing or is kind enough to offer assistance. I personally have never had a cat that was so hesitant to assimilate, or at the least eat and drink.
I truly appreciate your kind reply and will post as he progresses.

Thank you for the kind words regarding the forum and welcome.
You will find some very helpful and friendly ragdoll breeders and owners that can help with all of your questions. See you around

I am sure he will go through an adaptation period missing his former surroundings and people. However, you don't want him to get run-down from not eating or drinking either. I am not a breeder but I would suggest offering him some tasty wet food mixed with water just to try to get him to take some liquids, so he does not get dehydrated. I would be much more worried about him getting dehydrated than not eating. I am sure the breeders will have more helpful suggestions but that is the first thing that comes to my mind. By the way, welcome. I have three cats. My raggie is about five months old, recently adopted, and her name is Kaitie.
Hi Blue-
Well since yesterday evening he has used the litter box once. I did give him some Fancy Feast and lo and behold he ate it, not all of it but enough to let me know he has had something to eat. I know it's not the best food in the world but I borrowed a can to see if it would work as the least exspensive brands are always the tastiest to cats. Mixing it with a little water is a brilliant idea, I'll be sure and try that tomorrow.
Thanks so much for your reply, Caren
Hi Caren and welcome to the group.
With a change in homes or environment it can take a few days to adjust. For a four year old it would be harder than a kitten.
I usually tell people I place my kittens with to confine the kitten to a bathroom or bedroom for the first few days. Make sure the litterbox, food, and fresh water is nearby and that he knows where it is. It is best to use the same litter and food that he is used to and change over gradually.
The important thing is to make him feel secure and comfortable. Give him some quiet time and do check often and pet and talk sweetly to him. Not eating for a day would not overly concern me. Cats can also not use a litterbox for 12+ hours especially if not eating or drinking.

Hi Megailee-
Well I have great news! With all the replies and encouragement I received from the forum, Thurston is out and about and eating, drinking and generally enjoying himself! He's not following me yet, but he has jumped up on the bed for a small tummy rub, then sleeps under the bed, but not in the bed slats like he did at first!
I can't say thank you enough to everyone that replied, you really made a difference for me and my new kitty!
