I mentioned in the Wicked thread that I love to read, and I thought who else but all of you to help recommend some of your favorite books! I'm always looking for something new, because I go through them so fast. By the way, if you're an avid reader like myself, I totally recommend the Kindle (Amazon's electronic reader). I really don't know how I went without it now!
Some of my favorites:
Knight in Shining Armor (Jude Deveraux)
This is a romantic historical fantasy about a woman abandoned by her boyfriend while on vacation in Europe who meets a man from the past. I cried and laughed out loud several times while reading this.
The Lovely Bones (Alice Sebold)
This book has been made into a movie that's about to be released in theaters, but if you love to read definitely pick up this book. Its about a young girl who is murdered trying to help her family solve the murder. Its not for the shy of heart, but good god it'll pull at your heart strings.
The Sookie Stackhouse Novels (Charlaine Harris)
This is actually the basis for the HBO series True Blood. Its a Southern mystery series about a waitress (Sookie) dealing with the recently "out of the closet" vampires due to the Japanese developing synthetic blood. I LOVED this series.
Twilight novels and The Host (Stephenie Meyer)
These are both very good. The Twilight novels are young adult, and about vampires as well. The Host is about alien invasion.
Any novel by Kristin Hannah
These are just stories about normal people, but so good. Try out Firefly Lane or Between Sisters.
Jodi Picoult as well
Another good author, but a bit hit or miss on a few of them for me.
Let me know some of your favorites!!
I LOVED the Knight in Shining Armour by Deveraux -- I even know some men who have read it! I also like Kristen Hannah
I have more favorite authors than books:
Janet Evanovich
Stephen White
David Rosenfelt
David Baldacci
J. A. Jance
T. Davis Bunn
Karen Kingsbury
This is a very dangerous thread for a librarian -- I could go on and on.
Susan Isaacs (best: Shining Through) , John Irving (personal favorite: A Prayer for Owen Meany), Pat Conroy(all), Ann Rivers Siddons (all), Alice Hoffman, Ivan Doig (Dancing at the Rascal Fair), Terry Kay (To Dance With the White Dog), Kaye Gibbons (All)....
Evanovich makes me laugh out loud!! Another author who reminds me of her, is The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz (and the 2 sequels).. Oh, and the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.
I love this. Me too Teresa, Let's keep going on and on. To be continued....
I just read or rather listened to The Christmas sweater and it is worth reading or listening to. It makes you cry and makes you laugh. It is by Glenn Beck. I love to read most of the Amish books I will have to look up the authors. I read alot of Joyce Meyer Study books. I do not read anything scary.
I want a Kindle and will get one this year some time I think. James always lets me get one thing with our income tax money and last year was the boys so will hopefully get the Kindle at least by my birthday in the spring.
Well better go.
Ooh I so needed this thread yesterday, I desperately needed a new book but had no idea what to choose this time. I ended up going with a book called Before I Die by Jenny Downham. Its about a 16 year old girl who has been told she is going to die in the next few weeks from Cancer. She decides to write a list of things she wants to do before she dies. On the way she realises that things you want aren't always easy to get, things you want aren't always what you need and that the most unexpected things can be so important. Its not as good as I hoped, so far, as the first few chapters haven't been very grabbing but hopefully it will be better as I get more into it.
Some of my favourite books -
Year Of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.
Marley And Me by John Grogan.
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (I haven't liked any of her other books though).
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rowling (and all of the other Harry books too).
There is also another series of books that I like, they are well written and all true stories. They are all wrote by different authors and are all different stories on different people but they all have that in common and also the fact that they are truely heart wrenching. I can't remember the names of the few I have read off the top of my head though.
I forgot to mention Dan Brown. I finished reading The Lost Symbol and I loved it! Whenever I read his novels I have to have my laptop and Google nearby, I'm always astounded by all the references to art, statues, and architecture he uses.
Ooooh, I so love these types of threads. I used to be an avid reader but these days I have to make time to read a good book. While in the supermarket last week I bought 2 books which were on offer, one is a comedy romance 'lost dogs and lonely hearts' and the other is the story of Dewey - the library cat from the USA , can't remember where from right now, I read about 3 chapters and cried nearly all the way through so have put it to one side for when I have a quiet moment lol. I think it was an emotional week.
I loved Jilly Cooper's riders series, was a huge Stephen King and James Herbert fan but they spook me now lol.
On another board I used to be on, the members 'wrote' their own stories. One member would start a story then someone else would carry it on, passing from member to member, each adding their bit, they were really quite funny, usually starting as a mystery and ending up a comedy/romance.
I like Dan Brown too, and I read Glenn Beck's "the Christmas Sweater" last year and really liked it. I seem to listen to more books these days then actually read. I find and I can multitask better. I go around with my MP3 player (downloaded books) and headphones on all the time.
me too T. I just downloaded one The Christmas hope or something like that and talk about a tear jerker it is but boy does it make one so thankful for their family and to realize it can be taken from us at any time.
Got to go.
OMG Teresa, I'd be fired if I worked in a Library for sampling the wares.
Jenny, thanks for doing this! I have to go through my shelves now.
