Funny you should mention it. I just got a library card today. Our city is very small, and the library is really nice. Now I won't have to feel so guilty about buying books. I usually give my books to my daughters, my son or to friends. If not I donate them to a library, but I've never gone to this one. I've only lived here for six years

so I guess I haven't had a chance...NOT!

It just breaks my heart that people don't use the library!

Please don't tell me things like that! I guess I'm just amazed because I've been a library user since I was a child. Check out the library - ours has downloadable audio books. DVDs, books on CD, and lots more online resources. Libraries aren't just for books anymore!

I so wanted to show you our library when you visited Teresa, you would be horrified. It's a converted victorian house, ground floor only, with the reception desk in one room, children's books in another, travel, cd's and dvd's in a third and fiction in the last room. Anything for reference like cookery books, handicraft books, gardening, pets, hobbies etc are all in the hallway and the whole place smells damp and unloved. I do visit regularly but have to pay to request books from other branches and can only keep most books for 3 weeks or recent releases for 1 week. I really wish our library was bigger, better and more welcoming but for now I will just have to make do.
If I buy books I usually buy them from the charity shops and this year I have resolved to dispoae of some my older books the same way. So far we have taken 4 carrier bags full of books and split them between 2 charity shops but with another 2-3 hundred books in the house I think we need to be more ruthless!!
The sad thing is, I have a library card and I've gone and used the library maybe 5 times total. I know the library should be my friend...but a new book store is my happy place! Picking up a book that no one else has opened before is one of my favorite things. I had my copy of Twilight on the dresser the other day, Monkey jumped up and accidentally knocked it off, bending the cover diagonally in half! Needless to say I've now gone and bought the hardcover edition so that something like that can't happen again! A waste of money? Probably...but most of my books are going to be with me for life. If my (future) kids don't like them when Im gone I'll probably HAUNT them! Just kidding! If nothing happens with them other than being donated to a library (ironic, huh?) then I'll be happy.

That's funny you say that, I totally agree with you. The Cape has a system where if one library doesn't have your book, you can request it from the online data base, and they send it to the library of your choice for borrowing. They have a long list of titles that are not out yet but the libraries have ordered. I am constantly perusing the list getting my name on our library list first, because I love, love opening a book (with its wonderful smell) that no one else has read. I also have no patience waiting to read books that have just come out. I want them now. It's my only vice these days. I am a frustrated wannabe book store owner at heart. I think it's futile owning an independent bookstore in this day and age--you're asking to lose money. So new books at the library are the next best thing. And I've saved a fortune using the library, (although that probably goes right to the vet), and I love supporting it. Maybe your library has a list like that also Jenny. I swear I've saved enough to buy 2 more ragdolls. HA.
That's a really good tip Judy! I LOVE new book smell! I've always dreamed of having my own independent book store as well, but it would be impossible to compete with the chain stores and Amazon. I mentioned in the movie post that one of my favorite movies is You've Got Mail, and its because I love her little store...and I still cry when she walks out of it for the final time after having to close it.

That's another movie I watch over and over.

Oh my gosh, I've always used the library, but since I married my husband 6 years ago and moved here, I haven't gone to this one. I guess I was just busy with other things. This one reminds me of the one from my home town, Deer Park, Tx. Now that I hear myself, six years a long time just to venture out 3 miles to the library.

I am in the middle of the Book Thief, and it is an amazing read. It has won so many awards. It's about a young girl and the holocaust, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
