Hi,
Today we got an email from the breeder from who we'll get two kittens.
The kittens are 9 weeks old and got their first shots yesterday. The vet said they are in perfect healt, but Eddie got very sick after the shot. His two siblings are a bit sleepy, but Eddie still is very ill today.
We are very concerned of course, and so is the breeder.
Does this occur often in ragdoll kittens?
In three weeks they will get their second shot. Is there a big chance Eddie will get this sick again??
Thanks for answers anyway....
Aww, poor Eddie! Of course (human) babies get sick sometimes after shots, but I didn't know it happened to baby kitties! I hope he feels better soon and that he doesn't get sick after his next one. Sorry I don't have any better answers for you!
I usually get my kittens their first shots at around 9 weeks and have never had a problem. They instantly are running around.
On a rare occasion it is possible for a kitten to have a reaction to a shot (usually the 2nd or 3rd) and this is often an allegeric reaction. Some may be serious and I witnessed this at the vet once with someones household pet. The lady came rushing back after leaving 30 min prior with her cat gasping for air.
With Rabies shots I have seen lethargic reaction which usually goes away within 48 hours. As long as kitten or cat is drinking and hydrated this is usually not an issue.
I am not a vet so best to ask the vet.
Any cat with a serious reaction to a shot needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. If it is a shock reaction, then it can be deadly. A cat who has had a shock reaction probably should not get the next shot from the same manufacturer and may need preshot treatment to avert another shock reaction.
My first litter all had a problem after their first injections, all falling ill one after the other. Our vet admitted that there could be a problem and we changed brands for their second injection. All of the kittens were fine and every litter since has been vaccinated with the second brand with no problem. I hope Eddie will recover like mine did.
Eddie is getting better! After being very ill from his first shot, since today he is playing with his sibblings again and he is running throung the breeders house with socks, his favorite toy ;-)
We are so happy he is doing better now....
Tomorrow we pay Eddie and Luna another visit, and in three weeks they will come home!
That's great news. Poor little chap.
