Dexter was panting the other day after playing with a new toy I got him. He was running around going crazy and started panting. It was so funny. I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Charlie pants only when he plays with the laser toy, he so excited that he shouldn't stop to rest up, so I have to stop and wait

I tell the kids all the time to keep the dabird up as well because I think my cats would eat it as well. Bentley will drag it around and growl at the other cats if they come up to him while he has it. Too funny!
I love the search function....
Newman had me worried last night! He was running around like a maniac for around 20 minutes nonstop playing HARD with his favorite crinkle ball (formerly "lost" under the fridge and just newly found) He was just running and running over the bed, across the bar stools, through the bathtub in this giant loop with the ball in his mouth having a great time. I was thinking I'd never seen him play so hard and he was definitely having a lot of fun. When he finally stopped I realized he was panting a little. I'd never seen him or any of my other cats pant before. I could tell he wasn't in distress at the moment but after losing his brother Meeko at 10 months old I was immediately worried thinking this panting after play could be my first sign of heart problems in Newman.
When I went closer to get a better listen I must have touched his ball - so he grabbed it and was off running all over again.
I'll still ask the vet about it but I'm less worried now that I know others have seen their healthy ragdolls pant after playing hard.
Healthy cats pant after a hard workout. There are several ways to check cardiovascular health. The first is how fast he recovers to normal breathing. The second is to check by pressing a fingertip against his gums. They should pale a bit. When you release the finger, they should quickly pink again. And you can also check respirations per minute at rest. They should be about 30. You can put your ear to the chest and see if you hear any congestion. When there is good exercise, but not quite so intense, there is no sign of panting or the like. A vet visit is never wasted, but a cat showing no other sign probably can wait for it to be mentioned at the next vet visit.
Oh my gosh....my Pyjamas was exactly the same the night the Cat Catcher came home....they both flipped out and chased it to the point of exhaustion....but only Jamas was panting just like a dog and yet he didn't know when to quit. LOL. I think they were just over-excited for the new toy and loved playing with it. They love it heaps more than the Da Bird. Why do my cats have to be like the only ones who don't like Da Bird and the zoom groom???? sheesh...
A while back I posted that Bubba had a long upsetting panting spell after playing with da bird. I'm still not so sure it was normal, as he fell over and had to rest for a while afterwards. A few days ago I heard a strange coughing sound and found him where he had been looking out the window, little tongue sticking out panting. He always has a gurgly purr from his asthma. Now I'm afraid to get da bird out and really nervous about his heart. I think I'd better take him for a check up.
