I have been following your post and am so glad you continue to take the time to let us know how things are going. I hope you will share the findings from NC if they call you back and give you any info. Thank you! Smile
im sorry you are still dealing with this and i hope it will all be resolved shortly.

i will be looking for updates, and you have definitely given me something to consider with adopting my new kitten, when its born. I will be asking the breeder about this.

Im sorry if this sounds stupid - Do you know if TF is only found in America, or is it global? I am living in Australia.
Sadly it has been found in Australia. However I think they are just now beginning to get involved in testing. The cases that I'm aware of are limited, but I do recall being on another feline forum that was based in Australia and it seems some members on that forum had this and were encouraging others with intractable diarrhea to test for it.

Here is an abstract of the FIRST reported case in Australia - November 2008

HI...I was so relieved to know that my Ragdoll is not the only one going through this...he has had continual bouts of runny stools on and off for the last year and a half and he is 5 years old...he was recently treated w/ Ronidazole but he was VERY sensitive to it and he had neurological side effects so we couldn't finish the meds we have 8 pills left and had to cut down from 2x daily to 1x daily for the last couple days then finally had to quite the med. all together!...the vet was always treating him w/ Flagyll for Giardia before they discovered the Tritrichomonas...since the Ronidazole messes w/ his balance so much we don't know what else to do...we fear it may have some serious effects on him if we try it again....we are going to get a second opinion this Friday...the Flagyll does seem to stop the runny, smelly stools for a couple months but then out of the blue he has them again...they are talking about referring us to a cat specialist...I don't know where to go from here.....did your cat's have any side effects of Ronidazole?????
Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm not sure how much Diane checks in here right now, but she's definitely willing to share her experiences with you. Please PM her (private message - click on her name then click on Private Message) and I'm sure she'll get back with you. From talking with her, I don't believe any of her cats had any side effects from the medications - however, I believe she was only giving it once a day - not twice a day as you started out doing. Dosages were also based on weight - which I'm assuming they were for your cat also. Wishing you and your raggie all the best. Hope you'll stay around the forum and share him with us.

Print and show this document to your vet.

Dr. Gookin's recommended dose is 30mg per Kilo of weight ONCE A DAY. This dose has been studied and is effective. I fear your vet is making the same mistake mine did. She prescribed 25mg per kilo twice a day. Some of my kittens were having the reaction but luckily we noticed quickly and reduced the dose to Dr. Gookin's recommendation. Once the dose was reduced the kittens recovered and we were able to complete the treatment. Since, our treatment we have not had a reoccurance of TF.

Also recommend that your vet (or you) contact Dave Dybas of Highgait paws. He is very helpful and will give advice on whether re-treating is a good idea.
