Hi, I just adopted my 2nd Ragdoll. My first was adopted from a shelter and assumed to be a mix. The new Ragdoll was adopted from an individual who said he is purebred but hasn't been able to find his papers and had not sent the original ones in. My first question will be is there any way of registering him if she cannot find the papers. I probably should post that on another area of the forum. I do have the name and address of the breeder and the original owner has let the breeder know that I now own the cat. The breeder told her there was nothing she could do about the lost papers or at least that was her understanding of what she was told. I have not talked to the breeder yet myself. I wanted to check here first to see if that was true or if there were other options.

Thanks,

Hi Diana,

Even if the owner can not find the papers, they can call the organization the cat was registered in and ask for them to send them a duplicate, I believe it is around $7. Then, the owner would sign the back to have the cat transferred into your name. Do you know if it is TICA, CFA, ect? If for some reason they didn't send in the registration, and the cat hasn't been registered in the owners name, then the breeder would need to request another registration form be sent, and you would be able to fill in the information such as cats registered name, and your information, and it would be registering him for the first time.Smile

I hope that helps.

Purrs,

Thanks so much! I thought there must be a way because it can be done with dogs but I've only had one other purebred cat and got it as a kitten, sent in the registration and that was it so I have never had this type of issue before.

Actually the owners did NOT send in the original kitten papers so he has never been registered other than his litter registration. I do not know which association his litter was registered with so I'll have to find out that when I talk to the breeder.

Will the breeder be able to get just one duplicate, rather than a whole set? I will pay the cost of course. She probably won't be too happy about having to do this. Do breeders ever refuse something like this and if so, would I have any recourse if she does? I want to be prepared when I call just in case.

It should be a simple phone call, requesting the blue slip (registration), just for this particular kitten. It may be a bit of extra fee due to the time that has passed, but not very expensive, a few extra dollars, I believe.
Since the breeder was informed by the cats current owner, and the breeder has agreed to allow the cat to go to your home, I can't see any reason why the breeder would have any issues or problems doing so. If he/she is busy, it may take a little longer. She could refuse, I wouldn't know the reason, but without any contract, I don't believe you would have any recourse. The current owner could only be of help, if they find the missing paperwork, because as of right now, the registering association wouldn't have their current information as being the owner of the cat, since he wasn't registered.
I can't imagine the breeder being upset with you, the paperwork is important to many, it not only helps to support the registration club, but it shows your pride in your breed and cat. I also look at it as a birth certificate, it is a special document. Now that you have your new boy, remember, that the breeder may enjoy staying in touch with you and hearing how he settles in, and watching him grow. Hopefully, you will hit it off, as it is nice to be able to talk with them if you have questions or concerns that come up later.
Best Wishes!!

Thanks again, Stormi! I'll make that call.
