My 3 months old kitten has direaha for 2 days, I took him to see the vet today & he prescripted 50mg metronidazole for my kitten. The vet said I should give him every 12 hours for 10 days. I think the reason for the direaha is because I changed his wet food recently, & I feed him cold wet food, not room tempature & the vet said this might be the reason. He said it is safe to take the drug for protection, is it true? I searched the web & one information said this drug is no good for kittens, for kittens should be 25mg, not 50mg, please advise? I gave my kitten 1 pill already, should I continue?
Flagyl (Metronidazole) is the drug of choice for GI problems and is given to kittens of this age. Its dosage varies widely. (Is your kitten over 2 pounds?) I see no reason to question the vet's decision. It tastes terrible. Expect him to foam up.
JanH,
He is 3.5 pounds now. I am concerned about the side effect. When I searched the web & some infomation said this drug is no good, should not give to kittens.
It is given to kittens, although there may be a minimum age. It is given to 12 week olds. An adult 3.5 pound cat might get 70 mg twice per day - 20 mg/lb. I do not think the vet made a mistake in what he intended to prescribe. Obviously, if it worries you, then do not give it and see if the symptoms clear. However, do not stop and start. If you give more doses, then complete the course prescribed unless you see symptoms that worry you - and then call the vet to see what to do.
Thanks JanH, your advise make me feel better. I will continue.
