As some of you know along with my two adopted Ragdolls I have two mini macaws. The one named Diego is very outgoing and playful. He is not afraid of the cat as all which concerns me a lot. The parrot seems to look at the cats as "living parrot toys" Just the other day I caught Diego playing with Julianna.
Diego watches as Julianna approaches the cage. The Ragdoll will cram her plumpy self between the cage and the wall. As she sits and watches Diego will slide down the cage bars onto the grate of the cage. Watching Julianna reach into the cage and try to get a piece of wood that has fallen to the bottom of the cage grate. Julianna can't quite reach the wooden piece and she reaches into the cage as far as her arm will go with paws extended to try to grab it. Diego watches with interest so he pushes the wood piece with his beak closer to Miss Plumpy. The wooden piece inches closer and closer to the cat all the while Diego is making little content parrot noises. As Julianna again tries to reach the wooden piece extending her arm all the way into the cage my little Diego el Diablo rushes forward beak open in the attempt to bite her paw! However Julianna is too quick and pulls out her arm just in time. Diego laughs in my voice and races up to his perch climbing the bars as fast as he can. Julianna amazingly fast for her size attempts to grab his tail feathers.
I watch this interaction somewhat in horror but realize inside that this must NOT be the first time that they have "played". I am not sure what I watch can be considered as playing but the two have formed some kind of relationship. I am not sure what to call it and at times it does concern me. It is my hope that Julianna is not seeing Diego as dinner but as some kind of sick playmate and my parrot who seems to like to cheat death continues to have good fortune and not "get caught" by the cat. All my animals are well fed but instinct is instinct so I continue to pray for both my charges.
