Recently a few of my friends found out how much I am spending on my cat - unfortunately on top of most my friends being those annoying "cat haters" (which I'll never understand) they think its ridiculous that anyone would pay $700 for a kitty when you can get one for $75. Then there are the comments as to why I wouldn't want to rescue a poor kitty in a shelter.
I have a million reasons why to justify it! I just would love to hear your thoughts! Don't you just get soooo aggravated with cat haters. They have one bad experience and all of sudden cats are the worst thing ever. It just makes me angry.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Mainly I've been saying - "I am almost guaranteed a temperament, I am going to own this cat for a VERY long time and if I'm going to spend almost 20 years with this pet, I want it to be loving and lovable - I don't want to risk getting a cat they may not have all the qualities I am hoping for. With Ragdolls they almost always have the same personality and are like "cats in dog suits" like my past cat was."
Then I also sometimes mention that they are pure bred and beautiful!
If you do not want to ask why they do not dress from Goodwill (since they are focused on expenditure), then just say to each her own. (The price of a kitten, shelter or pedigreed, is a small fraction of the total lifetime costs we HOPE we will be able to spend on our cat.)
In addition to your comments on the reasons why you may also add
that you enjoy the finer things in life and that you can not put a price on love.
Also $700/ 20 years of life is $35 per year. Cheaper than cable at $50/month.

and more entertaining.
I have to say that I did not like cats at all until I met someone with a ragdoll and saw how beautiful they are. I'm really not an animal person but I have discovered I am a ragdoll one. I never thought I would spend this much on a cat and went to the breeders to just look and see the ragdoll kittens and ended up putting a deposit down right away. I still don't like other cats and much animals- I am all for animal rights, just don't really like to own them myself.
To be serious, almost everyone has some version of that reaction themselves about getting their first Ragdoll. I did. However, the vast majority of us would be completely comfortable to pay much more for our SECOND and later Ragdolls.
Dun worry too much, Karissa... It will definitely be worth the money that you are going to spend now in getting a genuine Ragdoll from a reputable breeder, than getting a kitten at a "special promo" price from BYB... Time will tell...
Initially, I only wanted to get one Ragdoll kitten from the breeder... But, in the end, I just couldn't resist but to get two... My frends were telling me "Oh my! Why TWO?? One is enough.. Blah Blah Blah" Haha... To me, the most impt reason is so that the kittens will not be lonely and have companion at home... Then of coz, the 2nd impt reason is I will have DOUBLE the joy and fun with my two Ragdolls! Wonderful! Hahaha..

Oh that is ridiculous. Lucky for me, I don't get comments on that as a lot of friends have been victims from BYB.
I have more comments on how cruel it is for me to keep my cats indoors only and that the only time they are allowed outside is on their harness and leash. No matter how much you explain to them that its for the best, they still insist thats its cruel. Its so frustrating.

Well said!

When some people have found out that I am getting two Raggies at one time, they look at me like with this how dare you glare. Sometimes I must admit to having a nagging feeling of guilt for spending so much. Then, I see those very same people spend their money on things they want. So...what is the difference?
I usually never get reactions to the price of my cats... I do get some about all the stuff I continuelly buy for them. I must admit I do go over the top there. I buy all those things as much for them as for me.
That said I never said how much I paid for Ebony (he was more expensive as he was a show kitty), so they just assume it was the same price as for Diwan

I only got it once from my DIL who owns a purebred boxer and so I asked her how much did you pay for your and why and she has never asked it again.
All I can say is they are worth every penny or dollar we pay for them. I am so much in love that I would love to have another but have not convinced James yet. He says not til my older cat is gone and don't like that much either. She is a stinker but still she is what keeps the other cats on their toes.
