I took the advice to not diet my kitten this week....and have come to realize that I probably do need to limit Solo's food, but I just wanted to check back with you guys once more. The vet says he looks ok, but probably shouldn't let him eat as much as he wants because he is "almost" overweight. Then I heard vets don't get ragdoll weights right all the time so I decided to just feed him as much as he would eat this week to see how it went.

If I keep his food dish full constantly, he still manages to just keep eating and eating. Last night he looked like a bowling ball, and I had refilled his food dish about 3times. My breeder recommended he eat about 1/2 cup of dry food a day, and yesterday he probably ate 3 cups.

The other day I gave him some wet food to start off with, but he still just keeps going back to eat and eat.

He doesn't eat frantically and finish off every last bit all at once, but he keeps returning to his dish and ends up finishing it off in about 3 or 4 hours.

I dunno, what do you guys think? He will be 5months old on the 29th and weighs 7lbs.
My Winston is like that, and his weight has always been a struggle. If he could, he'd eat all day.
However, since Solo is only 5 months old don't cut back TOO much yet, unless he really gets very chubby. He might be going through a growth spurt. I didn't start limiting Winston's food until he was around 8 months old and even then I just slowly switched him over to adult food. I didn't switch to meal feeding until he and Ollie were almost a year old. But with only one cat, portion control will be a lot easier for you even if you just leave the kibble out in a bowl for him to eat whenever!
My previous Ragdoll was addicted to dry kibble - she would eat it until she threw it all up, and then go back for more!!!

I found it best to: a) get her off the dry kibble (I ended up using it as treats for her) and onto canned food, b) only feed her twice a day, c) feed her 1 1/2 cans a day split into the two meals.

Otherwise she was very plump (beyond the typical Ragdoll shape).
Let me look and see what the boys were at 5 months as they eat and my vet does not say they are overweight.
Zeke was 6#
Mykah was 6.6#
So I would say not too far off. I would not worry about it yet but then I am not a vet or a breeder just a momma spoiled by her babies.
While most cats can self-regulate the amount they should eat, some will eat as much food is put in front of them.

I think Sarah and Valerie have given you some good advice. Smile
