Had to take Frankie to the Vet's this morning. Although he seems fine in himself ,generally and is eating ok, he has not passed any Urine in his litter box for nearly 2 days. The Vet got Urine from him ok and said he isn't 'blocked', also, as his bladder was only a third full, he has probably been peeing somewhere else! I had checked around at home and couldn't find or smell anything before we went! Anyway, further tests showed he had all the symtoms of cystitis, which is not that common in males, apparently. He will be doing further tests to see if there are any crystals present in the urine sample and get back to me later. He gave him an antibiotic shot, so hopefully that will put things right for him. Meanwhile I will have to track down where he has been 'busy'! Incidentally, he has been using his litterbox normally for his 'poos'. He has been a bit quiet since we came home and seems to be sleeping it off now. I will remain anxious until he uses his litterbox again though. I am hoping the cystal test proves negative, if positive he will probably have to go on a prescription diet.
Just had an update from the Vet! No crystals, so that is good news, especially as I have just stocked up on his usual food!
Glad he was not blocked, but when a cat seems not to be producing urine you have only hours to get him to the vet, not days. Usually, such a cat will repeatedly go to the litter and strain, which makes it more obvious.
Yes, thanks for that Jan. The problem was,on this occasion anyway, he wasn't showing any signs at all and certainly not straining or trying to go. As it turned out, his bladder was not full at all, so he must have gone else where but as yet I haven't found where, I have ordered one of those black light torches which hopefully will show where he went so i can deal with it. Had he shown the slightest sign of distress, I would have taken him to the vet straight away. I shall be keeping a watchful eye on him in the future!
I didn't think cystitis was all that rare in male cats -- Smoke just had it two months ago or so. Hope Frankie is soon well and you find his wee spots!! Does he have access to your garden -- could he have gone out there and you not know it? Just seems like if he had gone inside you'd quickly smell it!

Yes, that was what I thought T, and I have 'nose' second to none for smells! But no, he doesn't have access to outside he has a pen but has not been in it for a few days, and he hasn't been out on his harness either, the weather was awful over the monday, tuesday, so it's a bit of a mystery! Of course, as you know, Frankie is a gentleman, so maybe his urine doesnt smell!! Ha ha!! Funnily enough, when the vet expelled urine from him, that didn't smell either!!The vet reckons that it is not that common in male cats the same as it isn't common in human males. I've known loads of women who have had it, including myself, but I have never heard of a guy having it. something to do with the longer channel in a male than female, according to the vet. Of course, there are other UTIs apart from cystitis which presumamble affect both genders. Looking forward to seeing you soon!!
Oh... I'm glad it wasn't that serious...
I know the boys' urine doesn't smell as bad as the one of my previous Birman. You will have to keep an eye on him to see if he is going anywhere and seems... relieved when he comes back... I know both my rags always pee either before or right after I have given them food. Cyrano doesn't have the same routine, he would be tougher to observe if he were to start peeing somewhere else.
Hi Mary,

I'm so sorry Frankie is experiencing the nasty cystitis. Teddy had it last fall and it was not fun. If can send you a PDF document on cystitis, written by a team of vets from the U.S. Please PM me with your e-mail address and I'll forward it to you.

As for finding out where Frankie has been going, I found Teddy's traces in his bed, his carrier, and on the spare bed. So, if you haven't already checked those places, that's a possibility.

Thanks Coral, I have sent you a PM
Our youngest soren has had repeated bouts of cystitus.
Like yours he was happy enough, but was just repeatedly in and out of the litter box with no results.

Interestingly our vet said that this is common in male cats especially large inactive male cats and well that kind of describes him! lol
It was funny really, our vet was describing how this condition is common in cats which are "large and lazy" he was cuddling soren at the time and I said jokingly " surely you are not describing soren"? and he said " O no, not soren. But soren's "friend" lol Didn't want to give the poor guy a complex about his size or anything! lol

The vet did perscribe "cystaid" its a kind of suppliment that some studies show can reduce the insidences of it reacuring. Soren takes two capsuls a day.

Hope your little one feels better soon.
