I would get rid of the sofa and if that doesn't work then the boyfriend will have to go.

Haha, the couch is really great, and almost two months old, so that's not really possible
and as far as guys go, this one is really the cream of the crop! Not even kidding here, came home one day from work and he had spelled out "I love you" in rose petals on the bed. No occasion, just because! That's just one example, he does stuff like that all the time...and opening a car door? Well let's just say that I might not remember how to anymore! He's definitely a keeper. Just gotta work on his "scratches are bad, kitty causes scratches, therefore kitty is bad" mindset
So far the soft paws are helping with that very well.
