Growing up we had two burmese cats that thought using the litter tray was the best fun you could have, especially the covered ones. One would sit on top of it and bat the other while he was using it. Problems arose when we added a female ragdoll to the mix. Being a big cat she hated the small space of the closed litter box, but taking off the lid made her vulnerable to the playful pounces of the two burmese who would wait on the stairs going down to get her after she had used the litter tray, if not before leaving the area. We have kept our two kittens on the open litter tray, though I must admit the bits of cat litter that end up travelling to the carpet can be a pain. In all fairness they have never had an accident and will even use the litter tray at the same time as each other. Funnily enough, when we were researching the option before they arrived I came across a litter box that was disguised as an indoor pot plant! It had a covered entrance and the plant part was above it http://petsbestproducts.com/. Strange idea!
I have changed my mind on the litter box with hood.....
I've actually been doing quite a bit of research on this lately and I have come to the conclusion that uncovered is better. Others state that (and it makes sense) that if you cover them it keeps too much smell in and then the cat may not want to use the box as much. Also, the bigger ones (especially for Raggies) are better I made the mistake of buying them to small and that is why I was doing the research in the first place. I just bought one made by petmate that I love you can purchase it at Petco or other pet stores. It has a container on the side to hold the scoop. I think it's a GREAT box!
Well, you've seen Sam's medium sized open box ...

For obvious reasons we've had to go to a large high-sided plastic storage tub.
