Full Version: A taste for metal?

Billy, ever since we have had him, seems to love to chew on metal, it may be the radiator taps, chrome bathroom fittings (!!) and on occasions door handles!! At night time, I have to sit in our office at home with the light on and the blind up, as the horizontal slats are a silver colour and he has punctured right through one of them, at very least he likes to lick them and I am worried he will slice his tongue.

I really believed that when he saw the vet, she would say that he needed teeth out (Tiffy had a couple out soon after we got her) or at least some dental treatment, but the vet said there is nothing wrong with his teeth, however she advised that we tried to curb this habbit as his teeth are showing signs of dicolouration due to the metal!!

I know that some others have mentioned this.....I believe Coral's Teddy has a passion for a little bit of metal occasionally too, but wonder if anyone can shine any light on this for me. It happens most often in the mornings and at this time he also would chew the curtain pull cord (it is a circular one on a fitting) if I would allow it.
I hope someone has some advice for you, but we all know that Billy is just "special"!!

Ahhhh bless you T for putting it that way, in actual fact this is just a warm up to the post I have to make about my foot Wink
my little monster loves to chew on metal and plastic too. Sorry i dont have any advice or reasoning for it but i just thought that i would mention that i have to deal with it too.

Edwards eyes light up once he sees im wearing bracelets and he gets into them. I stop him straight away as i am frightened it will break his teeth. Luckily we dont really have any other metal things around. But he also likes to chew the little clips on the back of doors (the ones that hold onto the door stoppers to keep the door open)

naughty kitties.
As Sue mentions above, my Teddy has shown a passion for metal in the past - his faves were the connection between the toilet and water (lovely) and inside the closet door where the doors hinge together. Since he's had his teeth pulled (calicivirus related), his metal chewing has subsided a lot. I have a feeling his particular case was to do with the discomfort in his mouth and will keep an eye on future metal chewing. Teddy still chews paper and cardboard though. I understand that's fairly common with Ragdolls (and other pedigrees and moggies). I'm not sure what that's all about, but in Teddy's case it might be a nervous thing, as similar to Billy, he's "special." Wink
