Are you able to predict how big your 'kitten' will grow by its current weight. Moby is 10 Lbs. at 6 months. Is this average for a male? Is weight gain the fastest in the first 6 months?
My Zeke is 7# and is will be 6 months the 9th of Aug. I have a baby scale on the way so then I can record more accurately.
Each cat is different and unless the vet says he is overweight then I would say he is just a big boy.
I think that's big for 6 months. Blue was 8.5 lbs at 6 months, and is 12 lbs. at 9 months. I too would be curious to know if there is some formula to know how big your cat would be as an adult. How long do they gain weight for? Do they gain weight for the two years it takes them to mature?
I've read alot the past couple months and saved some info and this is what I have. I can't remember where I got all the info from and I don't know how true it is.
"A rough average for Ragdoll kittens is about 1 to 1.5 pounds for each month of age for the first year. They still grow and gain weight until they are 3 to 4 years old. At full maturity this is a large breed, with males (altered) weighing up to 20 pounds and females (altered) up to 15 pounds."
So going on this formula, he should roughly be between 6 and 9 pounds at 6 months. The males are usually larger I think? I would think the parents genetics might play into this too. Do you know how large his parents were?
His dad is a big fella - but I am unsure how much of that was fur as I did not pick him up. His mom though is quite slender, but she just had kittens so again I don't know how much of that weight was lost.
My breeder had a male cat to reach 38# so they can get big and no he was not fat. He was the length of a seat that holds two people that you put out in your foyer if you have one for people to sit in.
I know Zeke's mom and dad are big so I am expecting that too.
Well better go as 4 grandkids today a 6.5.3 and almost 2 yr old. Take me away calgon...
