Currently I have a 6 month old and a 3 month old kitten with very different coats. My older one (Moby) never really sheds. His coat is soft with medium-long fur. My little guy however is a shedding maniac. His coat is very fluffy and extremely soft. He seems to have "more" fur than Moby did at his age. I've heard (from somewhere - (not sure on the reliability of the source) that ragdolls won't really begin to shed until after 1 year - is this because the change in the seasons/weather? I cannot imagine Hershey shedding any more than he already does - YIKES!
Hi Anna,
Ragdoll kittens definitely shed! It sounds like Hershey is making up for Moby.
Their coats depend on a number of things - climate, nutrition, health, etc. - but it also has to do with the parenting line. For example, Teddy has medium length fur, and so do his mom and dad. But other cats from the same breeder have longer fur, but they also have different parents. Hopefully that makes sense. Are your two from different breeders or parenting?
You'll definitely notice more shedding when the cold weather turns warm. I think most of us agree our cats were "shedding maniacs" fairly recently. Thankfully that seems to have subsided. I brush Teddy at least twice a week, and when it was really bad, I was taking about three brushes full of fur from his coat - not to mention the state of my place.

yes, shedding maniac would describe it! lol its funny cause I remember reading that ragdolls dont shed!
I comb Pawla and Grey everyday and its a pleasant experience for all of us. There is always some hair in the comb.
I think all cats shed but some shed a lot more than others.

At a certain stage one starts to pull out fur rather than removing shed fur that is already in the coat. What one wants to do in grooming is to remove the shed fur and the fur that is just on the verge of being shed. If you continue to comb or brush, you probably could get fur until the cat had none left. That is one of the arts of grooming. Knowing when to stop so that the coat is clean of debris, but is not being damaged from removal of healthy coat.

Thanks Jan. I wondered about that so I do tend to comb lightly. They love it.
Our two ragdolls are only 9 months old, from two different breeders, and their coats feel and looks a little different from each other. But I can tell you, they started shedding early Spring and have not stopped. I will have to try daily combing as well.
With Moby I thought this is great - ragdolls really DON'T shed that much...LOL I'm investing in stocks for lint rollers before Hershey grows up and the stocks increase in price!!!
JanBeth, that's how I bond with Finn! She loves to be combed under her chin. I do it lightly with a greyhound comb. If i'm sitting on the bed or sofa, she'll hop next to me and show me her chin for combing/rubbing. She also likes having her belly combed, and she'll purr and shake her bum a bit. It cracks me up. She doesn't do this with any of the other grooming tools I've tried...we both love the greyhound-style comb!
I find that there are 2 different coat types for ragdolls, and I own both coat types.
Angel and Zoe both have the lower-shedding coats, but I find their hair to be a little more coarse than George's.
George's coat is a shedding-type coat where I have to brush him daily to combat the hair. His hair is softer and fluffier.
