All of ours shed, really badly too. But eh. They get brushed weekly and there is always lots and lots of hair coming out. Nothing we can really do about it, we wanted the longhaired cats lol.
So do you recommend that I use a comb? I have been using the circle shaped shedding blade and it seems to get most of the loose hair off. I once used the slicker brush but with the single coat I find it much too rough on their skin.
The Zoom Groom is best at getting loose fur out and not damaging the coat, plus most cats seem to really enjoy the "massage." The next most important tools are combs - and Greyhound combs are very good. Do not use hard pin slicker brushes or anything with blades that cut the coat - other than a matt cutter if there are difficult matts. If you are careful, then very soft wide spaced pin brushes can be useful too, but the Zoom Groom is the easiest to use, is very effective and is hard to misuse.
Thank you so much JanH - my slicker is going in the garbage as we speak!
Do not throw it out. It is the best thing to get fur out of carpet on cat furniture.
I've been wondering if the length/softness of the coat has to do with coat color in some way. I noticed that in a lot of photos I've seen of seal (seal mitted in particular, though I'm sure the mitts don't make a difference) raggies they seem to have longer 'fluffier' coats than the other colors. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Different genes control coat color and coat length and texture, so there is no direct correlation. (A shorter coat will mean darker color in pointed cats, since cooler skin results in darker color. That is why they are pointed - the coat darkens on ears, face, tail and feet, which are cooler than the rest of the body. If you have to shave a part of a pointed cats coat, that area will be dark - and then return to normal as the coat returns and new fur is grown at the warmer temperature.)
We use the slicker brush as did our first breeder when he showed us what to brush them with (our second breeder didnt show us as we already had a raggie and knew how to look after them).
I have heard the Zoom Groom is fantastic but if your showing its not to good as it takes out to much fur for our standard here in Australia. Otherwise we would most likely use it too
