Hi, today Eddie went for his annual boosters and the vet did all the usual checks, it seems Eddie needs a dental clean under G.A Sad . I just want to know what peoples experience are of this PLUS Eddie is over 9 yrs old and i am already worrying sick of him being under G.A

I know most of you are thinking this is just routine procedure but I am worried about my baby boy ... any advice or first hand exeperience would be appreciated ...Thanks x
oh no Nic I can totally understand how you feel! Surely there must be something in this day and age they can do without putting them under GA Sad it drives me mad how slowly that animal treatment has come on despite how much money it costs. I hope you can get lots of information from others that's been through the same thing, so that you can be reassured. Make sure that vet knows what he's dealing with, treating 'Our Precious Prince Eddie'!!!!!
Sending hugs to Eddie and of course to you!!!
Thanks Anita

I was a bit put off by the vet today ( a new vet to the practice) she seemed to keep putting things down to Eddie being a 'pedigree' as though that wasn't a good thing Sad ... he is always a grumpy bum at the vets and she was a bit 'faffy' so that makes him nervous and unco-operative. .

Poor Eddie, he had a tough day today - he has also lost 0.5Kg in weight, which i'm not too worried about but was thinking the other day he looks a bit skinnier at the back ?
There is some risk, so you need to be comfortable that the dental issues are serious enough to justify it. Just a general cleaning because of some plaque would probably not be enough for me, but inflammation of the gums or some signs of bad teeth probably would. Using anaesthetic is the only safe way to do dental work.
Hi Nic,

I know exactly how you feel about having to put them under. It's a worry, but if Eddie truly needs a dental and he's in good health overall, it shouldn't be a problem and he'll feel better once his teeth are cleaned. He may also be eating better afterwards (maybe a connection to his slight weight loss?).

I'll cross my fingers for you (and the grumpy bum - lol) that it's just a cleaning -- no extractions (argh!) -- and he'll be right as rain. I think one of the hardest things might be when you can't feed him the morning before his dental. Talk about a grumpy bum! Wink

When is he scheduled for his dental?

I've been waiting for the vet to tell me that Samantha needs some dental done, but so far he hasn't. I don't know if I would just let them "clean" her teeth which they seem to want to do. However, if they need to do actual dental work in terms of removing a tooth, then I would definitely let them do it. Like you, I don't like the thoughts of GA and also it worries me that for some reason they'll quit eating afterwards.

I do not think you need to worry about that. I have never read of it.
Sorry to hear that Nic; it's always such a worry isn't it, if they need anything done; however routine. Tiffy-T had 2 teeth out soon after arriving with me last year and to be truthful came home and within just 15 minutes was completely normal, eating, playing, setting about Billy, you really wouldn't have known she had been anywhere, let alone had a GA!

Hugs to the gorgeous "E"
Poor Eddie, and poor you too Nic. Sorry I can't help or offer advice it's not something I have had experienced yet thankfully but I wish Eddie well whatever you decide to do. Hugs to you both, and Monty of course!

Glad to hear that! I acquaint dental work with pain in the mouth and then fear they won't eat due to pain which in turn causes problems. You know I'm a total worry wart!!!
