Any suggestions on bath time for a cat that HATES water .. and I mean HATES it ..
So Danni got me thinking it was time to wash Humphrey .. but I tried and failed .. and who ended up in the water – I DID !
I did what Danni suggested, using warm water and gradually letting him get the feel of the water .. but as soon as he was in the bathroom he knew what was going .. so his climbed down my back, claws and all and has pushed me by bouncing off my back which meant I lost balance and landed head first in the bath tub (don’t worry no blood or bruising)!!
Anyway I tried taking him in with me, seeing as I was already drenched .. but that failed as well .. so Humphrey got away with not having a bath this week.
Seeing as tomorrow is Saturday I am planning on trying again .. is there any other easy way to get him in there?
My partner doesn’t really want to help because he doesn’t want Humphrey to be mad at him .. so his suggested holding Humphrey by his scruff the way there mothers do because it will stop Humphrey from moving – but I really really DON’T want to do that .. it seems mean Sad
So does anyone have suggestions on how to get Humphrey washed – his not smelling so good atm .. considering he thought rolling in mud last night was a fun thing to do while keeping mummy company Sad
Use warm water. Clip claws first. Give him firm footing with a towel to stand on. Rinse him with a container of water - do not try to immerse him in water. You can hold him by the scruff. It is often best done by two - one to control him and one to wash and rinse. Make sure not to get water or shampoo in eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Rinse MANY times.
I have the same problem with Cyrano who panics when he sees water. I'm lucky that birmans don't need as many baths as ragdolls as their fur is really different.
When I tried I managed to limit the problems... Like Jan advised I used several containers of water. I saw he hated to have his feet in the water, so I opened the tub. Talking softly to him with a soothing voice worked as did a very firm hand on the scruff. I never ever get close to the head during the bath. I'll do it once they are out of the tub. Having water on their heads never works with my boys.
He escaped twice but I managed to get it done. I'm nevertheless glad that he doesn't need another bath yet Big Grin
