Hi all,
Up until now titan has been so beautifully behaved.
he has now found screens. climbs up to the very top of them.
no matter how many time i say no and pull him off he comes straight back.
is this common?
my mate said her maine coon went through that stage but i dont want to wait til he outgrows out as our home is only brand newly built. and the screens are nice :-(
thanks
Isn't there some kind of cat repellant spray that you can use and spray on them to keep them off? Just thinking off the top of my head here. Or something like bitter apple spray - but maybe that's just if they are biting it and not climbing on them.
I would not leave windows open enough to let him have access to screens. He will quickly become heavy enough to knock the screens out of the frame and you do not want him running away.
Keep his claws clipped. This is a stage because soon he should be too heavy to make this fun. Use water pistols as a deterrent - and keep the screens away from him by opening windows from the top, etc. You do not want it to become something that he likes so well he will keep it up.
Okay. thank you all.
i think screens in america mest be different to here. they are bost onto the doors with mesh. its the mesh he grabs onto. windows are sliding basically but once again have screen and mesh. intruder protection basically. i am going to buy a spray bottle. he is aware what hes doing is wrong cos he runs away but then does it again. i think he is very stubborn and hates to hear the word no, like every child.
For screens you cannot make unavailable, can you put glass inserts in. In the US, screen doors usually have glass inserts for winter use. Clipping claws - or even using soft paws - will mean that he cannot get enough penetration to hold his weight, which is the reason this is a kitten problem more than for adult cats.
In the US, screen doors are outside the solid door and all that must be done to make them off limits is to close the regular door.
I've seen soft paws but I can't imagine trying to get those on.
i intend to clip his claws but we have vet appointment next week. although i have not picked a vet yet, i want just one vet who will care for titan the hole time, ppl think im crazy but they do it for their children how is it so different. anyways im afraid ill do it wrong so ill get the vet to show me :-D what r soft paws??
Our Sage liked to do this as a kitten. I made sure the old screens at our apt were well secured with extra screws around the frame. He outgrew it in a few months.[
