I came home this evening from being out for about 2 hours, and Arthur had lost the hair between his right eye and his ear! Sad There are some small red scratches, too. Does anyone have any idea what this is? I noticed that he was scratching the area, so I put some Neosporin on it right away and it seemed to keep him from scratching it as much. Does this seem like an allergic reaction? I just can't imagine how it happened (???), but I'm so concerned about him. I can't get to the vet until the morning -- and since he's acting normal otherwise, I didn't think it was necessary to take him to an emergency clinic. I checked his body for other areas of hair loss and/or scratches and didn't find anything. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me? I would really appreciate it...I know I won't be able to sleep tonight worrying about him.

Looks like claw marks. Maybe he had a scratch or a flea? If you call the vet tomorrow and give them his weight they can tell you how much liquid childrens benadryl you can give him. Just get a measurement syringe from them if you think it's allergies. Do his eyes have any discharge?

Wouldn't rush to the emergency vet.
Could be as simple as he scratched himself due to an itch and with sharp nails this is the result. If so, then it will heal as long as he doesnt keep scratching the same area.

No discharge in his eyes. He's running around and playing with his brother, so that's making me feel better.
I'm thinking he was actually scratched by Merlin. Ever had a cat scratch yourself, and you know how it welts up? That's what it looks like and they do itch (even on humans). I think just putting neosporin on it will be good. Then if it still seems inflamed in the morning check with your vet. Hair loss probably comes from him scratching it.

Be sure to check in tomorrow and let us know how it is
did u take him to the vet? what did they say? i hope he is doing better for you. Smile
Thanks for all the responses ~ I really appreciate all the advice! Smile Arthur is doing much better. The redness is gone and his fur is already starting to grow back. It appears to have been a scratch that was irritating him.
About a month ago Shylo had a large lump under her chin size of a quarter. It scared me to death.Turn out she scatched so hard and got infected from her paw touching her litter. Two weeks of meds and me putting on neosporin helped.
Glad Arthur is doing ok. They certainly can scare us, can't they?
