When Sebastian Blue came home he had an respiratory infection. Vet prescribed amoxicillon and it was cleared up. We brought him home with his food, but no water so he had diarrhea during the first week. He was also eating some of Gussies purina proplan kitten. Last Friday I noticed red blood in his stools, immed. took him back to the vet, who said she was relieved it was not black blood. She put him on a med. twice a day for lower bowel irritation, and said to mix his food (by now pro plan) with hill's prescription w/d with chicken. Not a kitten food, but she wants to firm up his stools. He was doing okay, stools were still soft but better and then tonight he passed a red bloody stool mixed with secretion. More blood than I have previously seen. We will be taking him back to the vet as soon as they open tomorrow, but I am wondering if anyone has any advice. Thanks.
A vet check is appropriate, but as the vet indicated, smaller amounts of bright red blood mean a small sore near the surface - and is not that dangerous. It can happen with diarrhea or constipation when a little torn wound opens.
I'm sorry Judy - I have no advice- just hope that he's ok. Check back in and let us know what the vet says.
Thank you both. I really appreciate your advice and help.
The vet said red blood can happen with kittens when they have upset bowels. She is not worried at all, and we will keep up the regime she has Blue on. (meds and food). So I am not going to worry about him anymore. I think the last time I worried about a little one like this was when I brought our first son home! I need to pretend this is my 6th kitten and RELAX.
Aww Judy I don't blame you. If Cello passed blood ,I would be a wreck to.I freak out over blood definitely not one of my strong points.
I 'm glad the vet was able to ease your mind and hopefully things get back to normal real soon here for Sebastian .
Well Judy - I'm like you -- I would have been right off to the vet too. It's hard not to worry when they can't tell you anything themselves like "hey mom, I feel fine, don't worry". I'd rather take them to the vet and get an all clear instead of just waiting to see.
Jan and Teresa I need your advice. Blue is still passing bloody stools with mucus. He has finished his medicine for that problem. Not every time but at least 1 every other day. And as if to coincide with the bathtub litterbox post, two days ago he went in our bathtub (stool). The next day I caught him in the act and put him in the litterbox. Today he went in the bath too. Always stool. The first time he went in the bathtub (master bed bath- main box), I bought a bigger litterbox, and put the smaller one in the downstairs bathroom. 98% of the time he uses the litterbox. As I mentioned if Gussie is in the box, he won't wait and I wonder if that is when he used the tub. She has a habit of crowding him and jumping in with him.
I called the vet today, and they need a "very fresh" sample to send out for guardia(sp?) testing. What is that, and why didn't they do that at least the second time we brought him in? I mentioned UTI and the bathtub (which thanks to you guys I now know about) and they said(receptionist) only if there is bloody urine? Should I request a test for that as well?
Thanks for any help you can give. Thanks,
Usually they will urinate inappropriately if it is UTI, so the fact he is defecating inappropriately sounds much like what vppersonal is going through with her new rehome raggie. Jan is much more knowledgable about this than I, but I believe he suggested on that thread that there it is usually a gastric problem in this case. I think your vet is on the right track in checking for the guardia at this point. You might want to check vppersonal's post and suggestions Jan gave there.
Good luck and let us know how he's doing!

...That's odd... here our vets ask to collect samples of stool for 2-3 days because giardia are not necessarily shed with every stool and usually they cause diarrhoea - I've not yet heard about bloody stools with giardia - a thorough testing is advisable though!
